I am at my wit's end trying to put the copyright symbol onto a layer through the Cookie Cutter feature (where all the symbols seem to be located) in Photoshop Elements 4.0.
I cannot find the answer in the user guide, or in the help area of the program, or by asking other photoshop users, including a professional photographer’s assistant.
The problem is that Cookie Cutter does not seem to allow me to put the symbol onto a layer and color it whatever color I'd like. Instead, I get a see-through or outline version of the symbol enclosed in a dashed box. I can move the box, stretch the box, rotate the box, etc. But, as soon as I get it where I want it, and click on the green checkmark arrow, it disappears.
What is going on? Can anyone out there help me make this work?

Welcome to the forum..
Have you tried using the custom shapes tool instead? If there is a copyright symbol in the cookie cutter it should be in the custom shapes as well. Then you can create the shape whatever color you want and it will be created on its own layer.
Hope this helps.

No, I haven't. I didn't know there was a Custom Shapes tool. As soon as I log off from the forum, I will try it. Can you tell me what to look for? Will it be on the left in the same column as the Text icon and the Cookie Cutter icon? What will it look like? Thank you.

It is on the left with the other tools. It is near the bottom. Its in a grouping of tools such as the line and square, circle, rectangle, etc. If you right click on the tool then you'll get a flyout box that lists all the tools associated with it. Or, if you click on the tool all the associated tools will appear at the top (kind of like the text tool has all that stuff at the top) and you can click on the tool that has the custom shapes...
Hope this is clear. If not let me know and I'll try to do a screen shot.

I've tried the copyright symbol and it works for me. I added a new layer, then used the cookie cutter tool for the "copyright" symbol. It showed up on my layer with just an outlined "C" with no circle. I went to my colors and chose the color I wanted. Then I used the paint bucket tool to fill.
After that, I was able to click on the move tool (which put a box around the copyright symbol) and move the symbol anywhere on the background. Not sure if I did it right but it worked for me. If that way doesn't work, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along and help you out.

Hi ...
... and welcome to the forum :)
I just type mine in ... most font do have the symbol :)
On the Mac I just hold down the Option Key and press G but on Windows I think its hold down the Alt key and type in 0169 on the numeric keypad .. (and I think that Contol and Alt and C works too ... but I'm not sure about that one :) )

Thank you, I'll try that. Did yours have the dashed box around it? I tried changing the color, and got it to show in the upper square near the bottom of the lefthand toolbar, but I did not use paint bucket. I thought the color would automatically apply like it does for Text. So I will see if that is what makes the difference.

Yes. Exactly.

Scratch this one off the list, Wendy... it does not create the copyright symbol.

Thanks Wendy, I wish that would work, but I've tried it over and over and it simply comes up blank. I use Control, Alt, C for the copyright symbol. And yes, it is in the font, but I have had the same trouble. I "type" it in with Control, Alt, C, and I get nothing but a blank space. That's why I was trying to do it with symbols. If I could get it directly through the Text function, that would be great.

I am new to this forum and just want to say thank you to everyone who answered my post. I got the message about typing 0169 with the Alt key instead of Control Alt C, and I'll try it. I'll try all the suggestions. I am simply overwhelmed with gratitude for the help. Thank you Thank you Thank you! :)

Hi ...
Do remember that you need to type the 0169 on the numberic keyboard ... :)
Just another thing ... to save yourself having to do this with each image you can actually make a brush of your signature and the copyright symbol.
There is a tutorial for this .. take a look in here:
Wendy's Mini Tutorials (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3641)
Scroll right down to the bottom of the list and you will see Making a simple signature brush and Complex copyright brush. They should help you make your own brush :)
