View Full Version : Print sizes....

I recently volunteered to take individual and team soccer pictures for my son's team. I created a background to place the photo on that had the team name and year. I created the original as an 8 x 10 thinking that if they wanted to print anything smalled they would not lose any detail. I started to print my son's today in an 5 x 7 and the sides moved in and cut of some of the team name. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to prevent this from happening. I would really hate to have to make multiple sizes and give each parent one for 8 x 10, 5 x 7, 4 x 6, etc.... It would just be a pain for me.
Thanks:)

I'm not sure exactly what you are doing, but if you are just taking the 8X10 and trying to print 5x7 then you will lose some. The aspect ratio is different.
An 8x10 would size down nicley to a 4x5 but thats probably a bit small.
Sorry my math brains is sleeping right now, so I can't figure out what the exact dimensions would be:D
You would likely be better off to crop the 8x10 to a 5x7. At least you would have control over what gets chopped off.
Hope this helps.:)

Gary - your brains not asleep - your exactly right :D . You can easily get a 4x5 from an 8x10 without losing anything but 4x6 or 5x7 involves cropping off part of the image or distorting it to fit which wouldn't look good. I would give the parents the choice of either an 8x10 or a 4x5 (easy to print 2 4x5's on one sheet of 8x10)

Oh, I might be able to add something here....and not because I am smart or anything, but the lightbulb has FINALLY shined my direction only with the guidance of several of the best on this site who have shed the light on re-sizing and the whole aspect ratio thing.
When you wish to add someone else's photo to your template...watch for the resolution of the picture (scanned or otherwise) to the template you wish to incorporate. That makes a big difference.
also as stated above when you change the print size all bets are off as to what gets clipped in the aspect ratio of what you are wanting to re-produce.
OK, Juergan, Byron, Tony, Gary....I do listen and it is coming along.
I think there is hope for me yet.:)
There are several threads out there on this topic. I'm apprehensive as to try and add them here. Not too good in that department either. But if I can locate them...I will send them your way.Even in a pm, as i can just type that!

Jeff,
Aspect ratios are an interesting issue. If your camera shoots in 3:2, you can print a 6 x 4 without any cropping. Going to 7 x 5 will need some cropping and a 10 x 8 even more. Going from a smaller print to a larger one, you loose parts of your image.
I've put together a little demonstration showing a 3:2 shot and its croppings in these three different sizes. If you want to produce different size prints of the same photo, you may want to keep this pattern in mind, so that the areas to be cut away are not too important for the overall image.

...and here is the same idea carried to a photo taken in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The cropping in this scenario is less severe.

Juergen, those illustrations just made me realize that I don't need to crop every pic to an exact print ratio and save it. All I really need to do in the beginning is make a couple of selections (temporary) in the other ratios and make sure the best of the pic is inside the smallest selection. I don't think I'm exactly making sense, but your illustrations make the point perfectly! And I'll keep that in mind while I finish up the wedding pictures I'm doing -- which could drag on forever if I keep on playing with them
Thanks for the help!

Juergen,
What a great object lesson!!
This will surely become a touchstone for future aspect ratio discussions.

Hi ...
Sometimes if Pixentral (the site the images are posted on) is running slow then you may have to wait a few moments for the images to load :) But they should just appear automatically ...
