OK first I'd like to say THANKS Tami for the new section for PSE 5. :D
Ok here's my question. In PSE 3 you could use Shift ALT when using the move tool to keep your photo or object to keep it's shape. What in the world do you do in PSE 5 to do this? I am totally scratching my head on this one....
There is probably a simple solution, but I can't figure out the simple stuff. :p
Thanks in advance for any help. :D

Hi Tina ...
When you are resizing using the move tool you just need to hold down Shift as you drag in or out and it will stay in proportion ... its the same in all versions :)

Oh Wendy, I have tried that. I must not be holding my mouth right or something...lol. When I tried that sometimes I get it all outta sorts. The sides will move in but the length doesn't move. What in the world am I doing??? I feel like a big goof here....lol. I am using the corners to move in the photo also.
I am seriously having a moment... ha ha.

Hi Tina ...
Lets say you are trying to resize a photo that is on its own layer ...
Just get the move tool and when the bounding box comes up around the image ... move your cursor into one corner. The cursor will change shape into a line with an arrow at each end of the line. Click down with the mouse ... hold down the shift key and drag from the corner diagonally inwards to the centre ..
That should sort it out for you :)

In PSE 5 there is a "Contrains Proportions" checkbox in the options bar - make sure that is checked.

OK I tried it in PSE 5 and it will move like that but if I move a little upward my pic goes right on up and distorts. (I am not a steady hand person at all.) I decided to shut down PSE5 and open PSE3 back up and it is locked down when I do that. Does that make sense? I can do that in three and be as clumsy as I am and not make any distortion. It isn't working the same in PSE 5 for me. =(

:) THANKS WENDY AND TRISH!!!!!
That was it Trish I had that box checked. Do you know that has just totally had me bum-fuzzled. :D:D
My children will return to looking normal now...lol.
Boy I was really distorting them. :(
THANKS AGAIN LADIES!!!!!

In my version of PSE5, I don't have to hold down any keys for it to constrain when scaling, it automatically does so I must have the constrain proportions box checked. If I hold down the shift key, then it no longer constrains and it distorts the image.

LOL- we were typing at the same time =)

So, then, it appears that the SHIFT key INVERTS the setting of the "Constrain Proportions" option?

Hey Jodi now that you ladies have straightened me out I see that too.
You guys have no clue how that was stressing me out.
Seriously...lol. I would have to give up on a program that didn't keep in proportion for me.
THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE HELP!!!!!

 Oh how weird is that. It's like the shift key is working like an on and off button everytime I hit it trying to do that. Oh I gotta break the habbit of the shift key. If I don't hit the shift key then it stays set but if I do then I gotta go back and click the box. OH BOY hope I catch on to that one easy. I got the CTRL Z down pat though.:D

Tina, so glad you started this. I too was having that problem and didn't ask about it. Now I know what to do if it happens again. Not to mention you have been cracking me up with all your post here.:D

Oh Kim nice to see in my moment of stress I was amusing you. :D
I'm telling you that so totally blew my mind. I even went to the help and it said to use the shift key and I was banging my head thinking what in the world. I was ready to seriously toss version 5 for that. lol  ok not really, I like it too much to do that.
Trying to figure it out was getting me nowhere. I had no choice but to ask and get my sanity back. :p I seriously haven't worked on a thing because of this. Now back to the drawing board with some shape...lol

Also Kim the wine has nothing to do with me not having a steady hand.

It was happening to me also. I kept holding down the shift key so I was turning it off. You learn something new here everyday. :D

Kim,
If you like using the shift key to constrain proportions, then just leave the Cons/Prop. box unchecked and use the shift key. When you have the Cons/Prop. box checked you won't need the shift key. Yes, it is like a toggle switch.

Glad that worked. I usually want proportions constrained, so I keep it checked.

I've noticed the same thing which seems to be different from previous versions. Whatever is checked, shift reverses it.

yes the ' constrain proportions ' was in good purpose to be left 'on' by default with the move tool. This wonderous new version of frames and layouts and doodad fun could have backfired otherwise... mostly due to the frames. This way there is no proportion problems when a user wants to enlarge/reduce a frame with their image in it. It was an extremely good idea for Adobe to do this. Imagine if it weren't 'on' by default...imagine the users who know nothing of the shift key or other tricks to keep there image from being distorted ? There is also the idea that this new version will attract BRAND NEW Adobe Elements users...who never owned previous versions.

I do like this myself. Just figuring it out was what got me...lol. They need a page in the manual for previous owners and what you need to know...lol. Or at least for me... ha ha. I do like these changes myself they seem to make things easier in the long run. I know there has been alot of question on the undo and stuff, but it just takes getting used to. So I don't mind.
