Does anyone have a suggestion on how to take a B&W photo of a person with a rose and then taking the rose and making it red and leaving the rest of the photo B&W. All suggestions are welcomed.

Use the appropriate selection tools to select the rose.
Feather the selection by 1 pixel (Select > Feather).

Press Control+U (Mac: Command+U).
Check the Colorize button.
Drag the HUE slider to the far right and then move the SATURATION slider to the right till you are satisfied with the effect.
Press OK and then Control+D (Command+D) to deselect.

Hi Bob ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

There are a couple of tutorials in the Subscriber Area showing how to do this .. Subscriber Area>Tutorials. One is called Making a Black & White Image with just a touch of Colour and the other is called Selective Colour.

Not sure if you are a subscriber yet but if you are not then it is worth subscribing as there are over 140 Video Tutorials and around 80 written ones plus you get the newsletter and a photo gallery too :)

Wendy,

But these are for when you start out with a coloured photo. Bob wants to start out with a B&W & selectively colour it. For that he'll need to follow Panos's suggestion.

One thing I forgot to mention:
If your B/W image is of Grayscale mode, you need to convert it to RGB before using the H/S adjustment. Before deselecting you can use the Levels command to fine tune the effect.

Overall this is an easy way to get the effect done. Personally I'm using Curves in CS2.

After you've opened the B&W Image in Elements Editor make sure the Mode is set to RGB....Image > Mode > RGB Colour.

Add a new layer above the Background Layer....Layer > New > Layer.

Set the Blending Mode of the new layer to Color.

Set your Foreground colour to whatever you want e.g Red.

Select a Soft Edge Brush and Paint over the Rose or where ever you wish.

Undo Mistakes by Erasing on the New Layer.

I have been trying to have one element of my photo in color with the rest black and white. I did it before using the magnetic lasso tool. Today, it won't work. When I click on the tool, I get a little hand not the pointer I got before. Don't know what the problem is.

I certainly would appreciate some help. Thanks a lot.
