View Full Version : Costco Printing?

I have become addicted to digi scrapping. I have finished several layouts, mostly using free or purchased kits from different websites. I would like to print out my pages and put them into scrapbooks. My paper scrappin friends think I'm crazy, and I'd love to be able to "show off" my work in albums. I think they might take me more seriously then. Plus it would just be nice to have.

I'm planning of having some printed 12 X 12 and some 8 X 8. I could do the 8x8 pages on my own printer, but I really down't love its print quality. So after reading several suggestions on different websites, I thought I'd try Costco.

My first question is which finish to pick, glossy or lustre. I was thinking lustre but I'm not sure what that is exactly. Glossy doesn't seem like a good idea though.

Second, on a couple of my layouts, I have pasted in some Disney pictures I scanned from a magazine. I'm wondering if Costco will still print them for me, or would that have copyright problems?

I know I have not done a gallery yet. I've been so busy scrappin I haven't had time. Now I need to make some Halloween costumes. So maybe I'll get to it soon. I just love this website and don't think I'd be able to do any of this if I hadn't found it. The membership is well worth it.

I think the copyright issue just depends on who is running the machine at that time, and if the photo is considered copyrighted. I had uploaded some photos to a large drug chain that I was messing around with, and one had Moe, from the Simpson's, in it. It didn't get printed and they put a release form in the pictures that I was to have 20th Century Fox sign! I asked the photo manager at the store about it and he said "Oh, that's no problem, I'll print it up for you." I know Disney is notorious for copyright protection so it may be a possibility that it is denied. You could try other places and you will probably get someone to do it eventually.

Thanks, I thought maybe that's what would happen. I guess the worst that could happen is that they'd say no. But I would to know ahead. I plan to do most of my Disney albums with papers. Just to save me the hassle.

I put 3 pages in my gallery but don't know how to add a link.

Carrie:

I have all (well about 90%) of my printing done at Costco. My local store is very good to me. I have a great relationship with them.

First of all: I would make your pages 12 x 12 and then when you are done, expand the canvas on one side to make it 12 x 18. Costco doesn't do a 12 x 12, but you can trim off the edge....or add a few photos to the side and fill up that canvas. Then just trim it when you get home.

SECOND: Whenever you send something to Costco...ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS, TURN THE AUTO CORRECTION OFF!!!!!! The color will not be what you want if you don't. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!!!! That auto correct comes up toward the end of you placing the order.....it's under EDIT OPTIONS.

THIRD: They have told me at costco, that for some reason they always crop about 3% of the image. That's what she initially said and then later said only about 1%, but she wanted to make sure that if I put a border around the edge that I made it large enough that I didn't lose it.

My best advice is to make friends with those that work there......they will be more than willing to help you out if you have a problem. Oh, and when I mistakely forgot to turn off the auto correct....I call them....they always do it for me!

After you have wined and dinned them, then send that one with Mickey on it!!! Actually, I think you'll be ok!

Carrie,

Here is the link to your gallery:

http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=13638

If you want to add a signature at the end with a personalised link to your gallery like many of us have then follow This Link (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showpost.php?p=155906&postcount=3) to get to Wendy's instructions for doing it.

Your gallery looks great but the images are a little on the small side. For the gallery I do a save for web and make the longest side 700 pixels. At a resolution of 72ppi you can have a maximum file size of 300k.

Oh, Bayla! I sure hope she has an easier time of it than I did!!! But then again I was in the middle of the golden text issue and couldn't even see straight. But really Carrie, if I can do it anyone can!

I get a lot of my prints done at costco also...the price is so great and I find the quality of their work is excellent!

I have a question for everyone though regarding paper choice... Do you find that your prints come out looking more sharp on the glossy paper, rather than their matte finish? Somehow the photos they print on the matte paper seem a little soft, and some of the highlights seem blown out, as opposed to the same image done on glossy. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this also, and what I might do to correct it? It will be too difficult to undercorrect my highlights just to "hope" they turn out ok in development.

Thanks to everyone in advance for your help, you guys are all so knowledgable!

Tim:

I tend to agree with you on that....not much, but a little, but I just think that is part of the finish, if you know what I mean, but I am probably wrong:rolleyes: ...

Oh, and Carrie, if you send that print with mickey off for printing, I wouldn't say a word to begin with....then just play stupid if they say anything to you when you pick it up!!! They make take pity on you and just give it to you rather than trash it. Plus, with the volume that that they do, they may not even notice it!

This is interesting about the large size printing. Thanks for explaining, but I have have a question. (just making sure I understand).

If I want 12x12 printed, and I make the canvas a 12 x 18...do I keep the extra area just plain white? Now when costco says they trim 1-3% is their a way of saving your image not to get clipped.
I'm just curious. I don't even think there is a costco near me.

Carrie, love the pages you've created.
I am new to the digi scrap idea~have done the other method for years.
And finally happy to say I was able to get joined in a scrappers membership place too.

msbrad,

Yes, that's one thing I enjoy doing a lot is 12x12 enlagements. I will usually create my 12x12 image on a 12x18 canvas, leave a little space of white, and then just fill up the other side with some smaller photos. You'll get the entire 12x18 sheet as one whole piece, but you can trim it at home. If you leave it pure white, that's ok too.. but it's just going to waste, so you might as well put a few other photos onto that space that will fit. Then when you get home you can trim those down... maybe make some nice wallet size of some family pics (what I like to do!).

Hope that helps a little!

Thanks Tim,
I appreciate it. I'll have to check with walgreens by us to see if they do that too. I can't remember a costco around.
I do like the suggestion for using up the extra space with smaller pics to use later.

Wow everyone, thanks for the great answers. I'm going to order a page to pick up on Sunday. We go to Costco every Sunday, so I plan to order a couple of pages each week, if I like how it turns out. I will make sure to turn off the color correction. I'm so glad you told me that because I probably would have left it on.

I make my pages on 12 X 12. Then I create a new canvas that is 12 X 18. I paste my page onto that page and position it. Then I added some extra photos around it. I think that should work. Do they need to be in jpeg? I just assumed they did; so I made them that way just for the printing copies.

msbrad, I'm fairly new to scrapbooking in general. I'm doing both paper and digi. I love doing the work on digi so much more, but I really like the look and feel of paper. Now that I'm so much better in Photoshop, I can do a digi page pretty quickly. It takes some time to do paper, getting things out, and cleaning up add to it. But know Photoshap helps speed it up a lot too.

I'll work on adding that link to my gallery as soon as the Halloween costumes are finished.

Oh, carrie, yes, they do need to be jpgs....costco doesn't recognize psd formats.

Sorry 'bout that!

so....
What, on average, does it cost at Costco for a 12"x12" (I guess really 12"x18") print?

Just curious more than anything right now. I haven't really started making a scrapbook yet, but my daughter is due to enter this world in about a week, so I need to get ready!

$2.99 for the 12 x 18, they don't do 12 x 12, but you could add a photo or to to the side and just cut those off!:D

Hi, I just wanted to add that Costco now prints in square 12 x 12 format on the last page of you internet order under MY CART down on the bottom section where it reviews the number of prints is an option for square prints and they will print a 12 x 12 for $2.99 The 12x18 is also $2.99 but you do not have to worry about filling the remaining 6 inches and worrying if they will truncate some of your print. Hope this helps.

Just want to be sure I understand correctly. One can now order 12x12 layouts at costco and not have to worry about expanding the side(s) for scrapbooks?

This really confuses me, and has kept me from printing digi pages, as I never know the exact format to use (send0. I have thought about Shutter fly, or Viovo, but don't know what I am supposed to do to get my pages to print without losing anything.

I read posts on this topic, but get lost trying to figure it out!

Thank you!
