Please excuse the repetition. I posted this on another forum and did not get the solution, so I thought I would try it on this forum:

When I use the Type tool I can only produce capital letters no matter whether I have my Caps Lock key on or off. How do I change this?

Hmmm.
I've not had that encounter before, but when things get wacky from the kids at school, we just re-boot and start again. Often that helps.
They can manage so that the letters typed on the keys, are not the ones that land on the monitor!

Be anxious to hear your solution.

This was the reply I received:
Hi ...

Some fonts are capitals only ... try another font and see oif that helps

If not then try deleteing the prefs file. To do that:

Close down Elements then click on the Editor start up icon and quickly hold down the Control, Alt and Shift keys (Mac users Command, Option and Shift). Continue to hold down all three keys until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings ... just say Yes.

Do let us know if either of those help

Wendy
And this was my answer:
I tried changing fonts and that didn't help. I'm not sure that I follow you on the second suggestion. Whe I click on the Editor start up icon and hold down the Control-Alt-Delete keys I bring up the Windows Task Manager.

I would appreciate a reply.

Well, there are times I'd like to re-boot the kids..but I do think that is against the job description.. Oh the stories I could tell...and they all say 'they didn't touch nothin'!
hmmm.
that could be a better entertainment thread the the "golden test".

Actually, Diana replied with:

Control+Alt+Shift

not Control+Alt+Delete

Do you see that Wendy wrote "Control-Alt-SHIFT" and you are trying "Control-Alt-DELETE"? (my CAPS for emphasis)

Try it again using the correct keys. This phantom caps-lock happens to the occasional person, and the preferences re-set to which Wendy refers is the usual cure.

If at first you don't succeed, you were probably not fast enough getting onto the keys - try it again.

My face is red! I did not notice that Wendy wrote Ctrl + Alt + Shift, but guess what; I tried editing some of the text in one of the lessons of the Layer Course that I have been taking and lo and behold the text came out with small letters! After that I no longer had the problem on any image that I worked on. Thanks anyway Wendy & Byron. Maybe I can buy you a drink someday.

I'm pleased to have learned a new tip. I was not aware of ctrl+alt+shift.
Thank You and I will tuck that into my knowledge bank.
Sure beats the re-boot!

Hi ...

With Elements (and some other Adobe's products) Control>Alt>Shift (Mac Command>Option>Shift) causes them to rebuild the prefs file. The prefs file can be prone to corruption so its usually the first thing to try when Elements behaves in a peculiar manner :)
