First time to save my photos for backup to CD. I will follow the backup wizard and then burn to CD-R or CD-RW? (I have heard it makes a difference if you want to edit the photos in the future?) I am saving as backup in case of disaster not for archiving permanently. (I have Nero 6)

Much appreciated if you could give me first-time tips at this stage. Cannot find them in any of my books.

Thanks! :?:

Hi Marie...

It doesn't make any difference whether you use a CD-R or CD-RW - the backup will be the same and you can load the photos into PSE3 at any time from either format.

The advantage of a CD-RW though is that you can erase and re-use it later.

The stories about CD-RW's are pretty scary. Some computers (older ones) will not read them acurately and they are more prone to errors because the surface is altered during each write task. Now that CD-R's are so inexpensive there is less need to reuse a RW. They were very attractive when disks were so expensive.

There is also the risk of writing over or erasing something that you don't intend to. I had a woman in one of my classes who erased her whole archive of her baby's pictures.

As with all things "computer" there are lots of different opinions on this. :)

Mary,

Can you image what it must have been like writing over such precious images.

I used to use rewritable disks but I had a method of doing it ... I saved on disk 1 then next time saved on disk 2, next time on disk 3 ... and the time after that I was back to disk 1.

That way if anything did go wrong at least you have several stages of backup to fall back on.

Its been much better since I bought a external hard drive ... so quick to do a backup :)
