Repeat of previous message (6/11) now gone from forum.

When trying to do a calalog backup the system calls for four discs. The first two seem to burn correctly but when the third is inserted at the prompt the system says it cannot write to the disc. Known good discs are used but the message persists.

I think I found a request from Adobe on another forum for info on this problem if anyone was experincing it, bit I can't find that post now either. Maybe it disappeared with everything else between 5/26 and 6/11. Very frustrating.

Hi...

Is this a one-off or has it happened more than once?

Yes, the server disaster was very frustrating for you and all our users, and you can only imagine how frustrating it was for us.... we managed to recover everything except the forum posts between those two dates. But fortunately, with our awesome and supportive community, we're building back more and more every day. So jump right in with your questions. Ask some over again, if you need to, and join us as we go forward together! :)

Thanks!

There have been problems with this and I have seen a few posts on the subject. I think that this may be the thread you are looking for :

It happens every time (I've tried it several times) and with every set of discs I try. I know the discs I am using are good - I have been able to use the same discs (RW) with different burn programs.

As I recall others were having the same type problems. But those posts have been lost. I just came back to see if any resolution had been made.

If Adobe comes up with a solution do they furnish a download to fix problems?

Hi ...

I only really know what I have read on the other forum but I know there have been quite a few people experiencing the same problem. Being a Mac user it doesn't affect me so I didn't really take much notice of the posts and don't know if anything has happened recently.

Going on past history I would doubt that they will release an update ... but thats just a guess on my part :)

Right, that's the one. As someone else said in that forum Adobe should warn all registered users when a problem of this magnitude is found. Some have reported losing photos because the backup didn't work correctly. I've used a seperate CD burner to just copy my pictures directory to CDs. If I ever have to restore I'll have to redo my catalog, but that's better than losing everything.

Does the problem exist with both Backup and Move..?

I have no "past history" with Adobe, but if they don't furnish a fix for this (if they ever figure one out) I certainly won't have any "future history" with them either. I like the program, it's relatively inexpensive and it does just about all the photo processing I want to do. But a problem that has the potential of causing the loss of valuable, maybe irreplaceable, photos unless one is aware of it, is certainly one which Adobe should warn its users of and furnish a fix gratis as soon as one is developed. This problem has been known to them since at least some tim in April. I am a registered user, and I have not received any notice from them. That lack of concern for their customers STINKS!

Its probably worth keeping an eye on that thread as it seems to be ongoing ...

It may also be worth keeping an eye on the PSE downloads section on Adobe just in case there is any news.

PhotoWil,

There are two routines under Backup - Copy / Move and Backup... You can use Move to back your catalog up, just make sure you answer no to the question about deleting the files from your hard drive.

Do you also get the problem with Move?

Since I hadn't heard anything lately about this problem I decided to once again search Adobe to see if anything had been done about it. Guess what - PSE4 is now out and it is supposed to fix the problem. Big Deal!

Searching further, on another Adobe forum, I found info that lead me to this on the Adobe Support Knowledge Base:

Backup to CD/DVD burn times are short and discs are blank (Photoshop Elements 3.0 Organizer)

Issue

When you choose File > Backup in Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 Organizer and select the option to back up your catalog to CD or DVD, burn times for some discs are only a few seconds, and the progress bar never reaches 1%. When you are prompted to verify the disc, disc verification completes quickly and reports that the backup was successful. However, the catalog did not copy to the disc successfully.

Details

You are unable to perform a restore from the backup media.

Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Contact Adobe Tech Support.

Photoshop Elements 4.0 has now been released and this specific problem should no longer occur in the new version. Please call Adobe Tech Support in your country to discuss the issue further. If you live in North America, call 206-675.6358. For a list of International Tech Support phone numbers please visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/intlsupport.html .

This problem is covered under our complimentary support policy and you won't be charged for the call.

Solution 2: Use third-party burn software to burn your catalog to CD or DVD.

In Photoshop Elements:

1. Select File > Backup.

2. Select Backup The Catalog.

3. Select a hard drive as the destination drive for your catalog (for example, D:\).

4. Click Browse, specify the path to the folder where you want to save your backup, and then click Done.

5. Use your third-party CD/DVD burn software to burn the content from the backup folder to CD/DVD.

Note: If you wish to restore the catalog at a later time, first copy the contents from the CD or DVD to your hard drive, and then choose File > Restore > Hard Drive/Other Volume in Photoshop Elements.

*******

I haven't yet contacted the number listed, but, in reply to the request for what I htink about "this support site" I think it really STINKS. Why was this information not transmitted directly to the Registered Users of the product???? To have to periodically go out and search for this type info, and search in many different places to find it is simply UNSATISFACTORY customer "service."

And it looks like Adobe has no intiention of fixing PSE3 with any kind of free download. You want a fix - go spend more money for the latest edition and hope it performs as advertised. NO THANKS.

Hello Wendy.
From one enlightened elder to another, I am having problems posting on the http://www.adobeforums.com/ user forum. The instructions say "click on back to topics list" and then "click on add topic". However that selection button "add topic" is nowhere to be found. I must have been setting here staring at the screen for minutes, but could not find it. Please help.
Thanks, Guenter

PhotoWil,

I have PSE4 and backup functions are still funky on the newer version. I found that when I used the Organizer to back up my catalogue it lost all the tag and collection information, and burned three out of eight discs so badly that they could not be read back into the computer.

I have not gone to the extent that you have to research and/or fix the problem, I am just simply going to an Explorer based database and I will worry about what to do about the Organizer when the reorganizion is completed. Future backups will be done with my computer's burning software, and image files only will be on the discs. Photo categories will be built in to the new Explorer scheme.
