I downloaded some of the brushes at
http://www.easyelements.com/free-photoshop-brushes.html (http://www.easyelements.com/free-photoshop-brushes.html)
and I put them in Elements 5/presets/brushes
And I cannot find them now when I open Editor? I have downloaded brushes before and they were there?
Is there another step I am missing?

Sheila ..

Did you close down Elements and then do a restart ... they don't show up until you do :)

Yes, I did close it and open it and reboot... But still they are not there, I can see them in the folder and I can go in and load them, but they do not show up in the brushes drop down menu as others have. It is annoying to have to go fish through all the Adobe files to find a brush each time I want to try it.

I notice the names on his brushes are very long. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Do you ever change the name of brushes or would that not work?
I have been trying to figure out how to get them to install in the brushes drop down menu. They are very nice brushes.
I am now using Elements 5.

I have not Elements version 5. Maybe you downloaded
the wrong package. Sure is that I will find a solution
for you - but I can't do it now...

Benny,
Tip of the minute:
In a folder, NOT in Elements, try:
To open a new folder window: Just press the Ctrl key +
Click the 'up one level' icon - (it is a green arrow on a folder icon).

Btw. The Backspace key to go up/back one level, work both in
a Windows folder, and on the Internet.

Hi Sheila ...

When you look in the brushes folder are the brushes just a normal .abr file in the brushes folder or are they in their own folder in there ?? :)

Wendy

Sheila
October 15th, 2006, 07:54 AM
They are not in a folder, they are just there as .abr files. They do have very long names and each name begins the same, easy elements.

Hi Sheila ...

Have you installed lots of these different brush sets (.abr files) and did you download the PSE3 version ??

EDIT ... I just downloaded the Leaf set. When I unzip the file it is in its own folder Leaf Brush Set PSE3 folder. Inside is the .abr easyelements Leaf Brushes.abr.

Sounds like you took it out of the folder and installed it into the Brushes folder OK. Could you take a screenshot of where you have it installed ... that may make it easier to sort out :)

Hi Sheila ...

Sorry about the delay but I had to change computers to use PSE5 ...

I took the easyelements Leaf Brushes.abr copied and pasted it into the Presets>Brushes folder. Restarted PSE5 and it shows up just fine with the other brush sets ...

Hi Sheila ...

That is indeed where mine show up ... can you do a screen shot of where you installed them Presets>Brushes (with all the folders open so that we can see the .abr files and how they have installed)

That should make it easier to see what is wrong :)

Wendy

Sheila

I did, that is the first screen shot. The path is in the address bar

I unzipped the entire file into the brushes folder and then deleted the text file that went in with it. I still have the zip files. The brushes installed, they are the right size. Would there be any difference between unzipping the brush into the file and unzipping it to elsewhere and then copying and pasting the same thing in?

OK, I deleted the leaf brushes and redid by copy and paste method and stil they are not there. The drop down menu looks as it does in the brushes2 screen shot.

Could there be there someing in the Editor preferences I need to reset?

Hi Sheila ...

You said that you unzipped the entire file into the brushes folder and then deleted the text file that went in with it. Does that mean that inside the brushes folder you have a folder called leaf-brush-set.PSE3 and inside that is the easy elements Leaf.abr ?

If so then that is the problem ... the easy elements Leaf.abr needs to be just in the Previews>Brushes folder.

Take the .abr files out of their own folders and place the .abr files directly into Presets>Brushes. Then restart Elements and they should then show up :)

No all I have is what you see in the screen shot, the abr file.

When I open the zip file he also has a text file in there that tells how to put the brushes in and a copyright notice and chat. I tried deleting the leaf file and doing it the copy and paste way but still nothing. There is a thing called preset manager in the Editor?
I have put brushes in before. I put in the ss_music brushes and they are fine.

Well, I used the preset manager and loaded them that way and they lasted as long as editor was on but when I restarted editor they were gone.

Hi Sheila ...

Sorry I missed the message where you showed the screen shot ... everything seems to be in the right place so I really don't know why they are not showing.

One suggestion is take them all out and then try installing them one at a time and just check between each install that it is showing up OK.

I had no problem at all instlling the leaf brush ..

Try it one at a time and let me know how you go on .. I'll check back later as I am just going out :)

Sheila ...

There is something odd about the install ... If you look at the screenshot you will see that some of the brushes you have added don't appear to have a file size ... ???

I think that I would put them all in the trash and download a fresh set and start again with them :)

They all have a file size and a good sized one. I just did not have details checked when I did the screenshot. They all have the right file size. I just deleted all of them and redid them, still they are not there.

I may delete the whole bunch and redownload. But that seems strange to do because they are the correct size and name and everything. I will keep trying. Thank you for your help.

Hi Sheila ...

Umm this is a strange one ... I think that I would try a new download.

I'll keep my fiingers crossed that it works this time :)

I just did a redownload. I deleted the star brush zip and abr files off my computer, then I redownloaded the star brush and opened the zip file and copied it to the bruses and still not there.

Is there another nice brush file from another place, that I can download, that is in a zip file and try it and see if it works.

I found kids_easter_brushes on the adobe exchange and downloaded, unzipped, put into the brushes, and they are not showing up either. The only ones I have been able to add into it were the ss-music brushes.

Hi Sheila
In order to solve your problem, my plan was that I would work on it
until it was solved. But since you now figured it out, I could now
use the rest of the night making some other and more interesting stuff
instead :D
I already started on that "Sheila plan" - so, the following is ALL the brushes in PSE5 just after installing Elements 5 (when no extra brushes were added),

http://hjem.get2net.dk/b_pedersen/tut/brushes.gif

A link to my last two pages about brushes (this thread included) is on my Follow Up page in my signature below - notice that I have added an 'Enhance Action', etc... but isn't tested under PSE version 5.

Simple question. Version 5. Where exactly do you put the brushes? Can you tell me the path in windows explorer? I want to make a shortcut (like Tony taught me in an earlier thread). Thanks!

Same as always, Marie - that part hasn't changed in 5 (it's also the same for shapes, textures, styles, patterns, etc.):
\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Presets\Brushes ;)

I don't know what Tony taught you but if you want a
Multi Link thing, then you write something like this code.

Copy the following into a text file in Notepad and save as
a BAT file, Go.bat - notice how simple it is, one number for
each option that you like...

@echo off
echo.
c:
cd \Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0

echo. 1: Brushes [abr files]
echo. 2: Plug-Ins [Camera Raw.8bi]
echo. 3: ...\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements
echo. 4: whatever
echo. 5: whatever and so on...

echo.
set /p a=Input a number:
if "%a%"=="1" explorer Presets\Brushes
if "%a%"=="2" explorer Plug-Ins\File Formats
if "%a%"=="3" explorer %homepath%\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements
if "%a%"=="4" explorer

Benny -

for your code, try to make the drive a variable - <SrcDrv>, or similar for your package -

I have partitions on my box upstairs, so the main drive there is F:\ (not C:\) - - when I wrote the installer engine for the Action Effects Packs, I had to use variables galore to make them work on all possible combinations - ;)

So if I use C:\ upstairs, it won't work :(

Yes Graffi (and thanks for reply), if it was a large program in a ZIP file, then I would use
registry keys and lots variable. A CMD file for XP, or a BAT file for most
OS, Windows 9X(ME) and XP... The OS could be tested like this:
if "%OS%" == "Windows_NT" goto XP
... and if not, then use Choice.COM but then I would better create a VBS file instead but then problems would come for users with 'Norton Antivirus', etc...
My reason for this program to be very simple and brief is that it is not over the readers head. If he/she could understand a simple ASCII example, then she would also be able to modify the drive letter from C:\ to Z:\
But your right and I agree. Anyway, if the users in here would say what OS
they are using and which path should be included, then a usefull program would be easy to create. Maybe the RAW database along with the path where you solve cache problems, etc. would be a good idea.
For examples about how to modify a BATch file with Choice.com, see one of my older homepages:
http://users.cybercity.dk/~bse26236/batutil/NEWS4.HTM#hex2decnew
I already asked the people in here what they want but none had suggestions for new programs.

btw. An example about how to get all brush files onto a list is this BAT file:
Open Notepad, write 4 lines like below,
then put the file into the brush folder, and double click
dir /b /s /on *.abr >> %0
notepad %0
exit
:

Tips: Press F5 key in Notepad
