Hi all,

I've been using Elements 3 for about 2 years with iPhoto (iLife 2004 version) and all has been working perfectly. Now I've upgraded from to OSX 10.3 to 10.4 and iPhoto 6 as part of iLife 2006 and get very odd results. Previous photos which have been edited via Elements now crash iPhot when it tries to open them either for editing or slide shows. If I restore the image to original in iPhoto then its OK but if I edit (having set Edit using Elelments) it crashes when iPhot tries to display the thumbnail or open/slide show etc.

Promblem most likely to occur with photos from my Canon 20d (8.1M pixel) than my S40 (4M pixel)

I've searched all over but this does not seem to be a problem that has cropped up elsewhere - can anyone help, I've done all the usual Mac maintenance things.

thanks

Hi ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

This is something that I haven't heard about before ... I'm still using iPhoto 5 and 10.4.5 on this computer but I will transfer an iPhoto library over to the iMac and check it out on iPhoto 6.

What sort of Mac do you have ??

There maybe something wrong with iPhoto, in terms of corruption. I would suggest you first make a backup of your iPhoto files (users/your_name/pictures/iPhotos, copy this folder to another location, just in case).

Then, launch iPhoto while holding the Option and Command keys down. Then choose the option to Rebuild iPhoto Database, to begin. See if this helps.

OK I tried this but no joy on the PE front (did remove all my previous edits though :( All works OK if I choose Graphic Converter as the editor (Mac users will recognise this app) but if I set Photoshop as the editor iPhoto crashes when the edited image is returned. May try uninstall/reinstalling Photoshop.

Go to apple.com/support and look at the iPhoto discussions. There has been some talk about this issue. Also make sure you are at 6.0.5. The issue seems to be when you add the specific combination of OSX 10.4, iPhoto 6, and PSE 3.

I am a Mac Powerbook G4 user, using a Canon 20D for pictures. I have been importing pictures to iPhoto for a photo management tool. All my editing is done in Photoshop and then reimported to iPhoto. Several weeks ago though, iPhoto quit importing my edited Photoshop photos. I use Actions in Photoshop to speed up my image processing. But I have found the iPhoto crashes only when I take a Canon 20D picture edited with or without actions and import it into iPhoto. My Powershot pictures do not crash iPhoto even with the same edits & Actions used.

I did see one or two other posts in different forums speaking to similar issues. I've heard this issue could be related to the latest updates to Quick Time and/or iTunes. Any ideas? I am running the latest iPhoto & OSX updates.

This issue is seriously impacting my workflow and productivity. I have consulted with the Apple Genius and they are baffled - no help there. Canon doesn't seem to be much help either. I am hoping someone in this forum might be able to shed some light on how to correct this problem.

Hi ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

Justs lets clarify a few things:

Have used this workflow sucessfully in the past ?

When you say iPhoto crashes ... what actually happens?

... what size and file type are your images and have you changed anything at all in your workflow ?

Oh and have you installed anything new in the last few weeks ?

Sorry to ask so many questions :)

FWIW, I have the same problem described. A Canon 10D, PhotoShop Elements 3, and iPhoto 6. I did some testing and it seems that somehow the image is tainted. It's not the state if iPhoto, and so rebuilding the cache has no effect. I can take a "problem image", send it to another account on the computer which is using a different iPhoto library, and plop it in, and then try to bring it up full screen and then, CRASH.

By the way, I just found http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304487

Did you try the fix (workaround) provided by the Apple doc ?
