View Full Version : Updating the organizer from PSE4 to PSE5

I just downloaded PSE5 and noticed that the instructions stress removing PSE4 and not switching between the organizer in PSE 4 and 5. Having invested a lot of time in categories and tags in PSE4, I want to make sure that none of that work is lost. I have converted the catalog in PSE5 and everything looks fine. Will I need to do a full back up of my new PSE5 catalog, or can I just update my PSE4 back up files? Are there any major differences in the PSE5 organizer that I need to be aware of beyond the new "create" options...does it work pretty much the same?

Hello and welcome to the forum
You should not have lost anything in the translation. PSE5 copies your PSE4 catalog and converts it. You can not move back and forth between the catalogs.
If you look in the following folder you should see two catalogs-My Catalog-1.PSA (your old PSE4 catalog) and My Catalog.PSA (the converted PSE5 catalog).
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalog
As for backups, you will now be backing up the data in the My Catalog.PSA, the PSE5 version.

If you ae using the PSE Backup function, I would do one Full Backup under PSE5 : it may even force you to do a Full Backup in PSE 5 before you do any Incremental Backups. If you are not using the PSE Backup function, then I do suggest making a Backup of the catalog after you have converted it to the PSE5 format.
Any major differences in the Organizer
- if you use the Downloader, look carelfully the first time that you run it - there are differences. If you care where the photos are located, then look carefully at the folder name that will be used by PSE 5.
- the first time you use the Downloader, click on the Advanced button so that you will know which options have been moved to advanced and if you care about any of these options.

You know, I have a question. Everytime I stick any sort of connector into my usb port (like my Ipod or my external drive -- anything), the PSE 5 auto-downloader (probably wrong terminology) pops up to gobble up whatever it is. Fortunately it is a dialog box so I simply say "no."
Is there a way to disable this? I have no qualms about putting in my SD card and then manually telling PSE to go get my photos off the card. Is there some advantage to the auto-downloader that I am missing, other than the automation aspect? (I disabled this in version 3 and never missed it.)

One difference in the PSE5 downloader is that will probably need to go to the Advanced button in order to stop from downloading files that you do not want to download from the connected device.
If you do not want the downloader to start automatically at all -
Have you looked in the PSE 5 Organizer Preferences - I think that I saw a choice for having the Auto Downloader active or not. (I am not currently at a PC that has PSE5 so I can't give you the specific text.)
I suggest that you look at the Preferences first because the Downloader does not seem to have given me as much grief in PSE 5 - so setting Preferences might be more effective than it has been for some people in prior versions. If that does not work, post back again to discuss alternatives.

Barb: I thought that that preference meant whether you wanted every single photo to automatically go right in or you wanted to specify beforehand. I bet I would have to go into the computer to disable the autodownloader. Or, I simply say "no" whenever the dialog box comes up. So far, I like the new way it brings the photos in. I just do not want every single USB connection to generate PSE5.
