I have avery elementary question. If I create a tag or other embellishment how do I make it separate from its background? Do I put it on a blank canvas on a separate layer? Does that make it separate and I wont have to select it in order to use it somewhere else? How do I save it ? I really want to submit something for the scrapbook exchange and I know this will be a problem.

Hi Chris ...
Whe you create a tag you need to create it on a new layer (Layer>New>Layer) ... that means that the tag is separate. You then need to save it as a psd file and when you come to use it you can just open up the psd file and then drag and drop the tag into your scrapbooking page :)

Thanks Wendy,
As you can see I have all kinds of problems. I took the layers class so I should know this.

Hi Chris ...
There is a lot to learn and its so easy to forget things .. sometime it just takes a little jog of the memory and then it all comes back again :)
Do let me know how you go on with the things you are creating :)

Once you have it on a transparent background you can always save it as a .png file - that way it can be used again. In the scrapping world almost all items with a transparent background are saved as .png files.

Hi ..
One of the problems with saving it as a .gif or .png instead of a .psd file is that it won't then save all your layers so you won't be be able to go back and vary the things. For my own personal use I save as .psds on a transparent background then when I want to use them I do Select>All, Edit Copy ... and then use Edit>Paste to add them to my new page.
If I send my embellishments to someone else then I tend to save them as a gif on a transparent backgound .. that way its smaller to send but also it means that they can't change it :)
