View Full Version : Photoshop Elements 5 worth the wait

I just returned this past week from vacation and finally this morning I downloaded PSE5. After playing with most of the features today, I want to give the folks at Adobe two thumbs up...way up! I particularly like the Colors Curves, albeit, still a ways short of Curves, but it does a decent job and will be used. Additionally, the general layout is very easy to become accustomed to, Unsharp Mask is nicely placed for a smoother workflow and while B&W I prefer to process in CS2, the PSE5 B&W conversion feature is very useful and easy to follow.
I have not dived into the Create features, so that will have to wait.
Workflow from RAW to print is fantabulous, I have so far no complaints. It took nearly 45 minutes to convert catalog from PSE3 to PSE5, but I expected that. I can only compare to PSE3, but PSE5 is just as efficient, if not more so, in what I have experienced today. I agree with most everyone, PSE5 is worth the wait, and worth the investment.:) :D

Ric - would you care to elaborate on this? I find that opening RAW and editing is a tad slow on PSE4.
Thanks.

Rick you must not use the UNDO & REDO shortcuts on the new
shortcuts.. Sorry they didn't include it, as they have put it on previous releases.
But if that is my only item, as it is today, Elements 5 certainly adds more features and is much more user friendly..
Yes it was worth the wait, keep up the good work Adobe Developers...

I have spent the last 6 months testing Elements, and I have to agree that it is a very neat piece of software. Personally the lack of undo/redo buttons is not a problem for me, the same with the save button that has dissapeared. The keyboard shortcuts do the job just as well (Ctrl+z and ctrl+y). The best new addition in my opinion is the flash galleries, a great way to display photos in a very professional looking format. The only thing that isn't great is the built in ftp client, it would be good if it was able to create folders, but i'm sure this won;t affect many users.... All in all... A big thumbs up!

Ctrl+z/Cntrl+y is all that I have been using for UNDO/REDO. So I really can't say that I miss that feature, in fact I did not even notice it was missing until you posted. I am going to "play" with PSE5 more today. I will address workflow in separate posting later today.

It sounds great. I didn't upgrade for PS4 but now, I am seriously looking to upgrade to PS5 as it includes the curves and many nice new stuff.

I really think it's worth its price. A must have upgrade especially if you scrapbook a lot :)

Not being smart but. What if you don't scrapbook?. What if you use Elements for some more technological stuff. Like Astrophotography or amatuer landscape photography?. Does it have extra tools that are useful for those tasks apart from curves, which I know is somewhat implemented in Elements 5. Or just gee wiz stuff that Picasa has. I also use Element 3 with Painter 9.5.

Hello, Ric. I recognized the photo in your post. I'm in Flagstaff, just a few short miles north of you. Glad to see there is an AZ expert in these forums!

Hi Tricia,
Welcome to the forum. Nice to hear from a neighbor. Was just up on the peaks this week, disappointed somewhat in the Aspen colors this year, how about you? Sorry that it has taken a few days to respond as I am actively involved with operating a lab in Sedona, assisting in teaching digital photography at Sedona Red Rock High School, teaching Photoshop and Photoshop Elements in private tutorial sessions, and teaching Digital Photography 101 through the lab. Additionally I am in high demand by local artists that need my photographic studio and photo editing services, which I do on the side. My plate is full. So when I have spare time I participate in the forum here. I really think the members are super, and whenever I think it is time to chime in with a little "photo finishing industry" input, I will throw a couple of cents into the discussion.:)

Hi Ric,
You do sound extremely busy with your work. Sedona is the perfect place for what you describe. There are so many beautiful spots in this state to take photos, Sedona being tops on that list.
Yes, the fall colors here have not been as brilliant or striking as I've seen them in some years, although fall is late in coming here. However, nothing compares to the New England colors where I grew up, at least for photographic purposes.
Glad you are willing to share your expertise. I'm teaching myself PSE, so will see you along the way...

LOL, yes indeed. I can do anything on this machine, 100 things at a time if I want. I use iLife frequently. This computer just does what I want, when I want. Who could ask for more? :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. No you do not have to uninstall PSE3. Make sure PSE3 is not running when you install v5. You can have them both on your computer but you can not run them at the same time. You may try disabling your anti virus software and firewall and try again. I seem to recall some others having trouble installing with them on. Hope one of these helps.

I disabled my anti virus (don't have a firewall ) to no avail. Same messages. Now what.

Is PSE3 closed? If so, try restarting your computer and try again. I'll check and see if I can find any other threads with the same or similar messages.

I can't seem to find anyone else who has had your problem. I'm not a technical person so not sure on what you should do next. Hang in there a little while longer and I am sure someone else will be along soon that can help you much better than me. Sorry I couldn't be of more help but there are some great people here and someone should be able to help.

Googling your error message, I found this link:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bbf37a0
Although the advice refers to CS2, the error messages are so similar that, if it were me, I'd try the same fix. I.e. Open the CD in Windows Explorer, then run Setup.exe directly from the CD instead of relying on the CD to Autoplay.

Many thanks for your attention and suggestions. I re posted on "advanced" and got a reply from "nicklewis" who had also seen the posting on this site . His suggestion was quick and easy - just opening the CD from windows explorer instead of the "autoplay" and now I'm off and running. But this has been fun(?) and I plan to "keep in touch" at this site for the MANY MANY quiestion I'm sure will come up. Enjoy the day! Mary

Glad you got it. I had thought of that while I was searching the threads but then it slipped my mind when I came back to post. I just got my copy so no more playing around with the free trial. I can add all my other stuff now.
