Help! I am trying to make a collage of nine photos of a friend's new grandson. I set up a page (8" x 8"), made a blue gingham background, and a narrow dark blue stroke for a border. I added the images of him (cropped from larger photos) in a 3 x 3 grid.

Here's the problem. The nine images are approximately the same size, but I would like them all identical in size and with small white frames around them. Is there an easy way to resize all of them? I hope I do not have to start again and do the sizing and framing before I copy them into the collage.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Helen

Hi Helen ..

Try this:

Create a new layer Layer>New>Layer
Now select the rectangular marquee and make a selection (over one of the photos) ... make it the size you want all the photos to be and fill it with white

Now position the white rectangle over one of the photos ... Control Click on the white rectangle in the layers palette then click on the layer that has your photo in it.

Now do Select>Inverse
Edit>Delete ...

Do that process for each of the photo layers and they will then all be the same size. You can then move the white rectangle into the trash.

To get the white on the layers palette thumbnail of one of the photos then do Edit>Stroke ... use white set to inside and experiment with the size.

Hope that helps :)

Wendy,

Thank you for your always welcome advice! I tried what you had advised, and only had to change the one step to Cmd-Click as I am working on a Mac. The method worked perfectly except that, since I had already cropped the photos close to his head, they were then missing some of what I wanted.

So, I used your idea of making a square the exact size I wanted (2") on its own layer and coloured it black. I then positioned it behind the first photo so that their upper left corners matched (I used the arrow keys for placement). Then I made the photo the active layer and turned down its opacity so that I could see the square behind it. I resized the photo (holding down the Shift key) until it matched the size of the 2" square. then I put its opacity back up to 100% and moved the square behind the next photo.

I had planned to put a white border around each photo - but that sort of blended into the gingham too much so I just put a bevel around each one.

Here is the result which I sent off to Will yesterday. He loves it!:D

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Helen

Hi Helen ...

So pleased that you managed to sort it out ... and sorry about the Windows shortcuts. Even though I am a Mac user myself I have got so used to quoting the Windows shortcuts that I tend to use them automatically

Your montage looks really lovely and all the hard work you put into it has paid off ... its just beautiful :)

... and so is the baby !!
