View Full Version : Catalog Problem ?

Hi, I seem to have done "something" to upset my (Elements 4) catalog !
Just uploaded some pictures from my camera and all are safe and sound on the hard drive. However the catalog folder only shows one photo rather than the 70+ that should be present.
I have tried to "get photos" from the explorer folder containing the images but everyone is rejected because "an entry already exists" in the catalog that I'm attempting to update.
I've attempted to "Recover" the catalog (just in case !) but this hasn't helped.
All other catalog folders seem to be OK.
All I can think of doing is to delete the catalog and manually recreate by "getting" the photos again.
There must be a better way - hopefully ?

Hello Canarytops and welcome to the forum,
Normally a Catalog Recover helps straighten out most problems. You say you have tried this without success.
When you are looking in Organizer, what happens if you click the icon in the lower left and change to Folder View? Do all the images show up?
My quick thought is you have the images in another folder and have already imported that folder into Organizer. Do you normally erase your memory card between uploads?
Say you have 50 photos on your card and upload these to Folder 1 and put them in Organizer.
You do not erase the card after uploading and take 10 more pictures. When you upload to your folder, you load all 60 pictures in Folder 2 and will see all 60 when looking through Windjows.
When you open Organizer and try to import them, you'll only get the last 10 as the first 50 are already linked.
If this is not the case, please post back and we'll see about getting more answers.

I can sympathize with your struggle. My husband decided to upgrade my hardware without doing a backup first. (grrr...) Then he tried to fix it by putting all the files back using explorer. (arrgh...) He decided that the drive was getting too full, so he installed the files on a different drive. (sharpening my carving knife...)
Now I, a not very computer literate person, am trying to get all my photos and psd files onto the new drive. I am having one problem after another. Folks have already been helping me on this forum, but this is a mess. I keep getting the message that a folder cannot move because there are files on it that are not visible in the organizer. If I try to get those files, they do not load.
Recover Catalog made things worse. I've even managed to mess up some of the Explorer files now.
Is there a way to start over and get everything into the organizer from explorer?

Hi Ward,
Firstly apologies for the tardy response, (had problems getting web access while on holiday). Secondly many thanks for your reply. Your diagnosis was correct the images were already catalogued, however the error message was misleading because it quoted the "new" catalogue location as already containing the images rather that the "old" which would probably have been more helpful.
Once again many thanks.:)
Sara, unless one of the more experienced guys can offer a better solution it looks as if you will have to delete the catalogue and "Get Photos" from their existing locations ?

With the benefit of even more hindsight I note that the "error message" didn't actually specify the catalogue folder that already contained the image - I choose to concatenate the text with the following image location - oops !
