I'm not too sure on my terminology, but I see, for example, that in some of Kev's montages, that the individual elements are surrounded by a white and a black circle, triangle or rectangle as appropriate. How is this done?

Please remember I'm very new to it! I want to put a few pictures in these 'frames' on a background layer which is tightly-interlaced fern fronds with their colour changed to reddish mauve.

Ctrl + click on the layer that has the shape you want to surround.
Create a new layer.
Go to Edit>Stroke and then you can pick your stroke size, colour and where you want your stroke. If you want it to be squared off make sure you check the option for stroke 'inside' so the corner edges don't round off.

If you remember to put your stroke on a new layer each time , you have more control over them and can apply styles to them.

Hi Ann, I'm new to the Forum also. Some of the more experienced users will be along to give you a their experienced way, but for now, this is what I do: once to make a selection image (this should give you an outline the border) Click on Edit on top toolbar and choose stroke selection (you may use any color your like by using color swatch) this will put a border around selection; If that's not what your talking about, sorry.
