Hi folks!
I've recently started playing with Elements as part of an upcoming review and I decided to convert one of my Photoshop tutorials. It's the one that will let you take a flattened RGB image of reasonable resolution and convert it into a comic book style illustration. Give it a shot! Has anybody had any luck with this? I printed it off and did it step by step. When I am all done all that I have is a black & white picture w/ horizontal lines running through it. I really want to get it to work so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I haven't has a chance to try it out yet ... but I have it schedules for this weekend.
So if you don't get a reply before then .. I'll let you know how I go on.
I suggest that you start a new thread in the Advanced section as this is really just intended for links :)

I just thought of something. Does this only work for Mac's?

No ... Elements (Editor) works in the same way for both Macs and Windows.
Only the shortcuts are different ... and they are pretty similar :)

I tried this tutorial, and it worked perfectly, on my Mac. I was just playing around, do I just used the first photo I put my hands on, so it's not really anything special. But the effect worked fine. Here it is:

I will try it again this weekend. Probably just user error on my part!

There was one step that I struggled with. I missed making a new layer at the dot screen step. I just went ahead and did a 50% fill on the existing layer..hmmm didn't work
I think in the end I had 6 or so layers not counting my text layers and the talk ballon layer.

I had the same problem ... I finally realized that one of my top three "ink" layers was set to "normal" mode instead of "multiply".
When I changed that it worked out really well. Hope that might be a solution for you too.

Funny, one of my good friends wrote that that Comic Art tutorial (Hi Rick!). I work on that website, just check out my email address linked in my profile. Small world.
It's a great effect.

I tries it again last night & I ended up with a b&W picture with horizontal lines all over it. On step 3: Dot Screen - do you duplicate the Background layer or just do a blank layer? Not sure if this is my problem or not.

It's a new blank layer. Hope this solves your problem. Let us know.

Me again. I guess they won't let me post as "Guest" anymore :D
Anyhoo, I have an Elements Style of this effect in the works. I'll let you know when it is ready to roll. This should solve margtvl's problem or at least narrow down the possible causes of it.

Elements Styles, custom shapes, brushes etc will work on either Mac or Windows. (Only plug ins are platform dependant ... )
So no problem .... you can just download it and install :)

Rick, thank you. I'll use it, I'm sure. I did the original many-stepped effect, and it was really a lot of work and very detailed. If this works well, it'll be a great help!

Thanks, Rick! I completed one for my godson earlier this month but now I can do more for the rest of the family.

You're all very welcome. I hope you enjoy it. I love seeing that effect pop up in surprising places. My local UPN affiliate used it in their TV spots for a block of shows they call "the Comic Strip"--very cool.

OK I tinkered a little -- couldn't get it to show with the files in the effects folder -- so I created a folder called MacMerc Comic Art and moved the files into the created folder. It then worked in PSE 3.

Well, here is my first stab at the cartoon effect (and a page curl for added effect)

It's ok, but I think it loses something in the transition.

Thanks Will and Wendy. I'm just not sure I like the overall effect. I tried the download from above (thanks, a bunch) and I wasn't crazy about it at all. Maybe I just didn't pick a good subject. I'll keep trying.

Sherrie,
I think that this effect works better on some images than other :) ... so its a bit trial and error to find the right one.

I used it on Grant's Challenge for this week and it turned out nice so I submitted it as #1.
