Help w/ simplify layer

I was trying to follow the steps on "making a globe" (Photoshop Elements Techniques, Vol. 3, Num. 5). When I reach step 2, I get a message saying I can't go further because the layer needs to be "simplified." When I do this, the circle in the "globe" layer disappears. Anyone out there that can assist with this?

.. and welcome to the forum :)

I supect that you may have used the Ellipse Tool to make your circle instread of using the Ellipical Marquee Tool .. You will find the Elliptical Marquee Tool near the top of the tool bar and using it should solve your problem.

(The Ellipse Tool makes a shape layer but the Elliptical Marquee just makes a selection.)

I you get do stuck with it then just let us know and one of us will help you ... and do let us see your globe when it is finished :)
