Lesson 3 ?

Hi -

I have a question about Lesson 3. It may have been covered previously but those question/answers seem to be gone, at least temporarily.

When I made changes to my numbers in RGB as advised, my sample of foreground and background color in that picture, from white to light gray did not appear as yours did, but rather seemed to stay a solid white. I also noticed in PSE where it shows the background and foreground box that mine was white and black whereas yours was a white and darker gray. My numbers were the same as yours. There's probably a simple explanation, which is why I'm taking the class.
Why does mine differ from your video sample (and I'm using the sample image provided)?

Is this where Scott changes the levels back and white points ?

If so then the colours that show after the changes should be slightly different to White and Black. Take a look at the PDF that comes with it and you will see the very slight shift in colour.

My suggstion would be to try doing it again ...

As Wendy said, Lesson 3 is where Scott sets the preferences for the black, white and neutral points in Levels... at this point he hasn't touched the photo...

If you notice Scott's foreground & background colours are grey & white when the tutorial starts and don't change at all during the video. Because he is changing preferences it won't affect the foreground & background colours...

So,your foreground & background colours won't change during this particular lesson and will be whatever they are set to when you open PSE3.

I tried it several times switching back and forth between his tutorial and his sample that I was working with on my computer. I ensured my numbers remained the same as his and if they didn't then I changed them.

I thought that perhaps it was because of the colors started in the foreground and background and so I tried to duplicate it and was not successful. I also wondered about my theory because part of the tutorial (which was great) is to notice the slight color difference between the white and light gray on his sample - thus I figured I was doing something wrong since I couldn't get the same.

One thing I've learned while practicing with PSE3 is what can appear to be minor details can completely change the outcome and therefore following the instructions exactly is important. Kind of like balancing your checkbook.
