View Full Version : Homecoming decorations

My 17 year old is in charge of Homecoming this year. Their theme is New York, New York.

So, she says to me: "I need to find some movie posters to use to decorate the hall"

I say: "Movie posters??? That could mean anywhere......Broadway means NEW YORK, NEW YORK""

Then I start thinking......ALWAYS trouble.....I have all the old playbills from when I was young and went to Broadway on a somewhat regular basis. I kept all of them......Why, you ask??? because I never throw anything out....ask my husband.

So, I go into the basement, find the playbills and think they need to be 12 x 18 (of course!), but just scanned in they look awful....edges are messy, some folds showing and I don't want to have to try and FIX them. So, what do I do??? I make my own. Then I just copied those layers into a new document and just use the scanned picture on the front of the actual playbill. The fonts I used are pretty similar to the ones on the playbill too! Amazingly, I had them on my computer! I changed the theather name....easy, cause I did it in Elements! I also added the www.LCHSHOMECOMING2006 to the bottom. Only one playbill has a www on it. Most of mine are from the late 70's early 80's before PC's!

So, here are a few....I will post the additonal ones I do.

Good idea?????? I think so!!!:D

Colleen - those are fabulous. Good for you. You are an amazing woman - just over a huge wedding and onto something else for another child. You are a good Mom. Seeing those playbills brought back memories. I have the original booklet programme from My Fair Lady which I saw in London at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in January 1962. I too tend to hang onto things!

I just came back from picking them up. they really look great if I do say so myself!!!!!!!:D

I have a couple more I will do: 42nd street, Phamtom. I also have La Cage aux folles, and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, but I think the administration at a catholic HS might frown on those two. Maryellen is concerned that they might not let her use Dream Girls.......I'll go to the mat on that one!! The Supremes...how could they not let her use that!!!! I was shocked, she loved the way they turned out too! So did the girl at Costco. She says she loves seeing my stuff come through!:D :D That is always a nice shot to the ego!!!!

Thanks for your kind words everyone!!!!

Great job on them, and I bet she'll be thrilled to say, "MY Mom made those!"

Kay:

Actually I think she will be thrilled to say that I made them, but probably won't want me to know that :D and that's ok!

Kim:

Ah, no, if you really knew me.....you wouldn't be surprised at all that I kept them!!! I keep tons of useless things...ask my husband!!! Although, if anything ever happened to me....I do NOT live in the kind of house you see in the news where the paramedics have to negotiate 50 years of newspapers to find the body!!!!! :D

Colleen- I'm not amazed that you saved them- I'm amazed that you could find them!! I have a lot of stuff, but not sure I know where anything is.

Whew, glad to hear you don't have the 'pile up' going on. I think I would save everything too but I just don't have any room for storage. Up north (New York/Jersey where we're from) there are basements which are great for storing tons of stuff. Here in sunny Florida no basements and really not much of an attic. Just no storage space (at least in my house). In the garage everything gets moldy and buggy!
Glad your able to come through with stuff (cool stuff) when you need it.

Kay:

I think I was able to find them so easily was because Jerry keeps saying: Why are you holding on to these?!?!? I often thought it would have been cool to frame them and hang them. I saw some very recognizable (sp) people on broadway including Rex Harrison and Linda Rondstadt (when I liked her!:o ).....Now, if I were to frame them, I would use my photoshoped versions, but still wouldn't toss the originals!:o

Kim:

I don't think I could live without a basement!

Of course you will use the PS version & keep your originals in a safe place. When you pass on, your family can sell your basement cache on ebay. ;)

My Gran never threw out anything. However, she was very organized with it & her home was the cleanest & neatest on the block. When she died we were all complaining about having to go through her boxes of old letters, cards, news clippings to see if there was anything special we should keep. In the last box we found a letter my mother had written during the depression. Gran was away for several weeks & Mother sent her the Christmas Wish List. On the left-hand side were several trivial items her sister wanted. On the right-hand side Mother had written, "a pair of warm woolen mittens would be wonderful if you can afford to buy the wool & have time to knit them. If not, I can sew the holes in my gloves." It was so like Mother... she's always been so unselfish.

Nita, there are tears in my eyes reading your mother's Christmas wishes. I guess it's good that we save things like that. Years later the memories are touching, and it's a good reminder to be grateful that we don't have to face the hardships of previous generations.

My father-in-law came to the "new world" from the Isle of Man when he was a boy of about 12. He was supposed to join his older brother in Canada, but WWI broke out and his brother passed him on a ship heading back home to join the army. So he arrived on this continent knowing not a soul, with no money, and just a Bible with a few pressed flowers from home and a character reference letter from the minister. When my mother-in-law sold her house to move in with her daughter we all picked out some remembrances and that was one that came to my ex-husband. That was a treasure.

Those are great and touching memories for you both. Thanks you for sharing.

Colleen, you could take all your photshoped Playbills and arrange them all randonly and make one large poster size photo and have it framed.

You could always include the original in the corner of the framed new ones to give it that extra authenticity!
