I have tried, unsuccessfully, to use the Impressionist Brush. I get either no change at all to the photo or it becomes totally blurry and indistinguisible. I can't figure out how to use it properly, what settings to use to get it to do what I want, which is to make my photo look somewhat like an impressionistic painting/photo. I would appreciate any advice.

This isn't the answer you're waiting for, but just in case you don't know about it...there is a free Impressionist filter plug-in that can be used in Elements. It will give you the result that you are attempting to acheive. I can't remember the site but I came across it somewhere in the forum so perhaps someone will post it for you.

Hi ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

When you are using the Impressionist brush donlt forget that you can adjust the effect ... Select it and then click on more options at the top of the screen.

Have to admit that I don't really like this effect at all :)

Edit ... You can find the Impressionist plug in at the RetouchPro site (Its a Windows only plug in)

I've never found that the Impressionist brush is too impressive with a regular brush but it does let you create some interesting effects with other brushes. Try flowing stars for example. That creates some interesting effects.

Hi Tony ...

I never thought of doing that ... I will try it out. Thanks for the tip :)

I used the impressionist brush in the Work Of Art scrapbook page in my gallery. I didn't use it on the picture, though, but I used it to create the swirly background paper. I'd hate to think of what it would do to a picture!

I haven't had much luck with the impressionist brush, but Tony's post got me started again. I've been trying to make some brushes and have a flower brush that I thought I'd try as an impressionist brush. It seems to work better than the default brushes I tried.

maybe the rough edges are what make it work?

And look at what Wendy's fairies can do!

OK - I had to try with one of Wendy's snowflake brushes. Left is original. Middle uses a large snowflake brush, Dab mode. Right then applies a small snowflake brush, dab mode and an unsharp mask. I selected the berries so they would get impressioned. Interestingly although they aren't affected some of their colour gets picked up by the brush and used if you dab on them. Not sure yet quite what controls that.

Jo and Tony - I really like both of those! I have never used the impressionist brush but this sure is enticing me to give it a try.

Jo: I went looking for those fairies but they've got lost somewhere on my hard drive  . I thought they might be interesting :) . The brush also works on a blank layer but always seems to come out white

It looks like the impressionist brush picks up (and blends) the colors of the image you're working on, so it probably wouldn't work all by itself. Or maybe that has something to do with the tolerance setting?

While playing with the impressionist brush I thought I'd give the pattern stamp a whirl with the impressionist box checked. Whether the impressionist brush settings affect this I don't know but you can create some fun effects. This was done with the scattered maple leaf brush, the tie dye pattern and the impressionist box checked. Rather than just stamp the pattern it picks up the colours from the pattern and stamps those.

That's a nice effect, Tony. Looks like a background-in-the-making.
