I have been trying off and on for a couple of months to merge 4 pictures into one. when I drage a picture on top of another it replaces the bottom picture . The picture I want to put on the bottom was taken in 1904 or 5 so it is a 100 years old it isnt a glossy picture but a black and white that has yellowed somewhat over the years. All the rest of the pictures are modern glossy pictures. Can I merge the glossypictures with the none glossy one's
The modern pictureswere color that I converted to black and white.

If you're having trouble dragging one pic on top of another how about trying it another way -- in Elements there's always at least 3 ways to do something.
Try this.
Open all your pics.
"Select all" and edit>copy one of the pics you want on top.
Make the background pic active.
edit>paste
Now you should see two layers on that image.
If it's too big or too small, grab a corner (holding the shift key) and drag that corner in or out to size it.
If that works for you, repeat for the other pics you want in your collage.

I had the same problem when I was taking the online layers course...frustrating, isn't it! I haven't tried doing it Jo's way, but will soon do so. I ended up doing it the way Tony suggested. Sometimes the picture was there but it is too large and was simply covering the one underneath. Then, I had to use Transform to resize the image. However, I still am not sure that I am doing it the easiest way because I have watched several videos and it appears that they just drag the photo from the bin whenever they want to add it to the open one. You do have to be sure to have the one you're working with highlighted.
Maybe one of the Enlightened Ones will tell us how it is to be done. In the meantime, I'll take a look in one of my books!

Hi,
let's try and help.
If you have two photos open and you are not using the tile or cascade method, you pick the one you want as the background, make any enhancements you need. Then open the other photo and drag it down on to the background image in the bin, not drag it from the bin, this just swops the images.

If you look at this screenshot of one I'm working on, it should help to clarify the problem. I first opened the cubs, then swopped to the mother and then dragged momma into the cubs photo in the bin. Ignore the masking that is there because I wanted to blend the images together.
Hope this helps.

Kev's solution works best for me.
Just drag the picture down.

one thing that sometimes is set wrong is the
Windows file one click vs 2 clicks.
make sure that 2 clicks is set so that click and drag works correctly.

I worked on and moved around multiple pictures several ways and have been successful with all ,but Kev's suggestion to drag in the bin is a new one to me. Thanks Kev, looking forward to try that one too!!

M,
I prefer using this way over tiling the pictures. If when you're dragging you hold the shift key down the image you're dragging will be placed in the centre of the image.

I just want to send a BIG thank you for the help I've received from the Enlightened Ones! I have spent some time trying the ways mentioned by Kevin and Jo...both worked well. Never in a million years would I have thought of dragging a pic TO the bin! What a great tip! Took awhile for Frank's tip of 2 clicks to register...that issue IS a problem for newbies because you tend to think that dragging WON't work!
