View Full Version : Oh, do I feel dumb

I learned of this site several weeks ago and have greatly enjoyed browsing the forums here and all the wonderful help everyone provides. To this point, I have only dabbled with PSE, doing some basic stuff and tweaking a few photos here and there. The next few months are a busy time of year for me, but I plan to become a subscriber after that so I can spend the winter taking some of the online training and tutorials to improve my skills.

I have been using PSE 2, but decided I might as well go ahead and get PSE 4, which I did, just two days before the announcement of PSE 5. Oh, do I feel dumb. Not really, though, because I'm really still a beginner anyway.

I was able to spend a few hours last evening getting familiar with PSE 4, and I ran into a situation that I hope someone can give me some advice with.

In PSE 2, there is Batch Rename feature on the file browser window. With that, it is easy to rename any or all of a batch of files in a given folder. I really like it because the two drop-down menus gives me a lot of flexibility to name and number the files the way I want them. The Organizer in PSE 4 has a rename feature, but as far as I can tell, you just type a base name in the box and it assigns numbers to the files starting at 1, 2, 3, etc.

On the Editor side of PSE 4, the batch process mode includes a rename feature like I am used to, but using it makes a set of copies of the files, which I don't want to do, rather than simply rename them. Am I right in assuming that PES 4 won't let me rename files as PSE 2 does?

If so, would it cause any problems if I reinstalled PSE 2 on my computer along with PSE 4? I uninstalled 2 before installing 4, but it would be worthwhile to me (I think) to have it back, even just to do a batch rename now and then.

I hope that makes sense, and I'll appreciate any help or advice on it.

That will be no problem. I switch back and forth between 2 and 3 all the time.

Hi Skywriter

Welcome to the forums.:)

One thing from the beginning of your post.. you don't have to be a subscriber to do the online courses here. You may still be too busy but I thought you should know. I think subs get a discount but I'm not sure on that.

You can load PE2 and 4 at the same time just not run them at the same time.

I don't have PE4 and I don't batch rename so I can't be sure, but I thought there was a tickbox for leaving in same directory or overwrite or something to that effect.

Anyway ..I know not much help but welcome again.:D

You think that's dumb, ha! I once looked up how to spell 'dictionary' in the dictionary, before I realized it was on the front cover :D

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions.

And a big thank you to Byron. I just called Adobe and they are sending me an upgrade to PSE 5 for just the cost of shipping. A tip of the hat to Adobe as well for superb customer service.
