View Full Version : Elements 5.0

Well it's officially OUT. Check out the subscriber area and you will see a new section for elements 5.0. It's looks pretty cool, and I have to go back and watch the new video tutorials. There will also be a supplement to our newsletter this month for elements 5.

I am hoping and keeping my fingers crossed that since I have not received my Scrappy Awards prizes yet that when it comes it will include elements 5.0 instead of 4.0...........pretty please!! It has lots of cool features. :D

I had seen that page, but it's hard to figure out the new editing features (other than curves). Maybe more specific information will be forthcoming in the next few days.

The new curves and B&W features are neat, but I sure like my Grant's Tools and PET effects, which have curves and channel mixer actions to achieve the same results. Then again, the visualization boxes in PSE 5 are helpful if you don't like graphs, sliders and numerical values. I look forward to what will surely be a lively forum discussion about the new version and the benefits of upgrading. I sure hate to be two versions behind (using PSE 3)!

Have you all been to our new PSE 5.0 Learning Center yet? Matt has a great review of 5.0's new features. Go to the link below and click on "PSE 5.0 Preview" for the full article.

Could be wrong but I think the curves feature looks to be presets. Still better than nothing.

It seems the new setup for color variations will be nice. I would use it more in PE3 but the display is too small for my old eyes. If it gives a full view in PE5 with overlaid menus that would be great.

They sure upgraded in a hurry... I wonder if CS3 will be close behind? From what I've read Adobe is going the regular and premium versions route.... I hate that

Hi Charles ...

A Layer Mask is something that you add to a layer and it allows you to hide part of the layer .. its rather like erasing part of the layer but the great thing is that if you hide too much of it then you can simply paint it back in.

You can download an addon layer mask for Elements ... there is one in Grant's tool set. Here is the link (the install instructions are there too):

http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/index.html

Then take a look in the Subscriber area>Tutorial and you will see on called "Blending two images together using a layer mask" ... that will give you some idea of how powerful a mask can be :)

just had a look at the learning centre. Quite impressed with it but there are questions. One being in the mapping images, does it cater for UK addresses or is it only for Stateside members.
I'm very disappointed that once again Adobe have ignored Mac users.

Doesn't it seem like yesterday when they released 4.0?

Didn't notice that, James.

But Am I crazy??? I saw on one thread this morning it was about $89. and $69 for the upgrade. Then I thought I just saw $149. for the preorder????

You know, I just got 4.0 for Christmas. I guess I am a bit bummed out (sp). I don't want an upgrade, because I like having that disk. But second....if I were to get 5.0 (not as an upgrade) what happens to every tag and all my stuff in the organizer? Will they stay there????? Is there enough in 5.0 to warrant a purchase if you have 4.0????? If it is $149. , if I wait a few months will 5.0 show up at Costco:o ???? a lot cheaper.

I don't know if I am ready to jump ship from 4.0.......there is still so much I haven't touched there.......but ...... it's a new toy.......no, I don't think so....not yet at least...

What is everyone elses take on it? I would be upset too if I were a Mac user, ya think they would have come out with one for a PC and one for a Mac at the same time!

Bill,
If you look at the top of the Editor Screen in V3, the Organizer link is called Photo Browser also. One of my pet peeves-if it's Organizer, call it Organizer here. If it's Photo Browser here, call all related material Photo Browser.

I am kind of jazzed about what I've read so far on Version 5.

While looking quickly at the features, I did see a disclaimer this was only US address. I'm betting, given the popularity of mashing maps and data, this will change at some time in the future.

Best I can tell, the regular cost of about $149 is for the bundled Photoshop Elements 5.0 with Premiere Elements 3.0. The regular cost of about $89 is just for one. Discounting where applicable should make it less.

OK, the good news is this issue has been resolved, I believe all the links work correctly now. The bad news is that there was miscommunication between us and Adobe -- there is not a discount for PET subscribers. The links should take you to their upgrade pages, which offer discounts off the full version. We are correcting our website to reflect that. I apologize for the confusion.

September 12th, 2006, 02:21 PM
Well darn.. I was just about to call the number for my discount, too bad we dont get that one. Upgrades are such a hassle if you get a new computer down the road. Had my pse4 and premiere elements for a couple months.. Finally starting to get the hang of pse4 but me and premiere elements has had a few problems. Also on my desktop computer I have the AMD Athlon XP processor and it will not work with Premiere so I have to do that work with my laptop. I wonder if it will for the new version?

Ok, this is probably a dumb question but here goes. I have PSE 3, I am just learning with help from all you wonderful people. I keep seeing things on PSE 4 and was considering the upgrade for it and now here comes v. 5. Getting the new version in the bundle package is a pretty good deal. Although I don't think I need Premiere Elements.

My question is, if I get PSE 5, what is the difference between the upgrade and the full version? Is it the same thing put you get a discount because you already have an earlier version?

I think I'm echoing an earlier question:

Will this website/magazine start focusing primarily on v. 5? Within those tuts will things that are "undoable" in 3 & 4 be indicated?

In general, upgrades this quickly frustrate me to no end...it's too easy to get caught up in the rat race.

Also, for CS2 owners, perhaps the upgrade isn't really worth it...

Well, from what I can see, the curves feature is going to be nice. I have Grant's tools, but from the looks of the built in, this one could be easier and more friendly to the new user. I also like the fact that you can straighten the camera's perspective! That would be the one reason for me to upgrade by itself.

After checking out the video's, I also think the enhancements in Premier Elements will make it worthwhile to upgrade. The stop action and adding stills looks easier.

Kimi,
All your tags & catalog will move to 5.0 with no problem---just like the other upgrades (2 to 3, 3 to 4)
You do get the $20 discount because you are upgrading to from 3 or 4---the regular price is $99., you can either have the cd (box) shipped to you for the $79. (plus tax & shipping) or download it for $69.00.

Hi,
There is no difference, you are just getting a break for having a previous version.

Dorrie H.
September 12th, 2006, 07:01 PM
According to Adobe, you need a previous version in order for the Upgrade (which is the full prgram) version to actually install on your computer, because it looks for a previous version. It may not install if you do not actually have a previous version installed on you hard drive. I could be wrong, but that's what I understood when I called them today.

Colleen,
You want to upgrade (which is the full version) it will save all your tags & catalog. Now I'm not sure but I think you are asking about the download vs. getting the cd (box). They are both the same product, personally I paid the extra & (shipping & taxes) to get the cd, beause I use it at work as well as at home, then I know I can install it where I need it.

AngelicKim
September 12th, 2006, 07:29 PM
Sherry, I too want to thank you for the clarifying the that there is no difference in the upgrade and full. I asked about 4 hours ago and never got an answer.

If I upgrade I too am going for the extra cost to get the CD. Don't trust technology and I like to have the CD incase I need to reinstall.

I thought by *JUST* purchasing PSE4, I'd be safe for a while!

Now, as soon as I do that, here comes 5! Anyone else ticked off as much as me? Upgrades after upgrades!

This is getting ridiculous. The upgrade to 4 was $105Cdn. Now they want another $105? I don't think so!

As soon as I had purchased PSE2 - a month later PSE3 was released and I got it. When PSE4 was released a year ago I was really tempted, but I've struggled to hold out for PSE5! So far I'm really excited about what I've seen and read - except that I just purchased a couple of Panos actions and now I'm worried they won't work with PSE5.

I will probably have to wait until December to get it anyway, since I just bought a Wacom tablet.

From what I could find - Adobe announced 4.0 on Sept 2,7 2005, actual release date was "early Oct '05". So it has been just almost a year since it was released.

NMarti
September 13th, 2006, 12:11 AM
Too bad Adobe does not think enough of their customers to upgrade free or at a considerably reduced price when it has been less than a year since the previous version was released. Seems to me if they released 4 such a short time ago they must feel it had serious flaws or shortcomings to upgrade it so quickly. Most other software I have offers free upgrades during anywhere from the first year to several years depending on whether they have released a new full version - which is normally more than 11 months apart as is the case here. I for one will hang on to my money because I have CS2 in addition to all prior version of Elements. It would have to be pretty dazzling to convince me to upgrade now and it does not look like it is.

I purchased Elements 4.0 4 mos ago and have spent a couple hundred hours learning it. For me it's an easy answer....no upgrade at this point. I have M/S Digital Imaging (latest), Paint Shop (older version) and Photo Impact (older version). If I can't do it in E 4.0, I'll find a way in one of the others. Variety is the spice of life. I use E 4.0 for my gallery and these forums as a matter of principal, but there are other full programs that compliment E 4.0 very effectively for less than the price of this upgrade. It's not for me at this time. CS2 will likely be my next consideration down the road. As a hobbyist and occassional web graphics designer, I have all I need for now.

Well, I couldn't stand it-I just ordered the new bundled version. I checked out the price at Amazon, the bundle was $129, and supposedly has a $30 rebate coupon in the box. I saved another $30 by applying for an Amazon credit card, so I figure I paid $69 (that is on the full version-I recently did a system restore and haven't reloaded alot of my "stuff" yet-including photos, filters and brushes. I was just getting ready to start entering 6 years worth of photos into the organizer-now I'm glad I've been procrastinating!).

An interesting note is that just about an hour before I rec'd the email telling me about PSE5, I rec'd one from Corel announcing PSP11. I've had PSP since 7 (it was my first graphics program) but never really use it anymore, so I don't think I'll upgrade that one anytime soon. Weird coincidence(?) that they were announced on the same day!

I hope it's a little longer before PSE 6 comes out, though!

I think for me I would probably decide between updating from Elements 3 to Elements 5 OR buying CS2. I can get the academic version of CS2 relatively cheaply. Either way, I won't be rushing into any quick decisions. Sometimes the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.:D

Once PSE5 is released I'd like to get some feedback from people like myself who have actually used it in the 'real world' so to speak.

Well, it feels like I also just got PSE 4.0 too. And I'm not even finished Scott's "The Photoshop Elements 4" book yet!

However, I'm pretty excited about Version 5, and will most likely have it by this time time next month:D

I just got PE4 on July.

I have been using PE4 since I got it, this past July, and probably I allready know about 5% of the product. I saw all the introductory ads. and it looks tempting. I'm the kind of person who likes to be technologically updated, but I thinks I'll wait probably 'till Christmas.

Can you imagine if I pay $119.00 for the bundle now + S&H ( That's about $30.00 in my case, sorry but for my mental tranquility I need to have the CD and the User Guide on my hands).

And then a couple of month from now (hey Christmas is around the corner!) I see the same product on Compusa, Costco or OfficeMax with an instant rebate of $20.00 or $30.00 and another $30.00 rebate for Upgrade!

Well, I think I'll have to control my self and wait, I'll get it sooner or later.

Sorry if this link has been posted before (I might have missed it), but PC Magazine already has a review of PSE 5.

They're pleased with it anyway...

Tracy

PS - waiting a while probably IS the way to go for now...but can I do it?

How about the "English" date notation? yymmdd That would be good. I have to use ACDSee currently, just for that feature

Earlier post about DNG and transferring data was a good point. It's alright keeping data in E3's database, sometimes you want it to go with the file.

Chris ...

I'm pretty sure that yymmdd is now included ... but when they release the demo version do check it out from there. :)

I just wonder how many people here bought 4 and then were sorry when people actually started using it and finding issues with it. I actually uninstalled mine because it was not as good as 3 in my opinion. I want to see the responses from people who actually use it too - not people who are highly trained graphics program users but regular people. Also - still no comments from anyone on the actions question. Does anyone know?

When PSE4 was first released it wasn't getting glowing reviews - I read a lot of comments about it being "ho-hum" and pretty "mundane". Those same reviewers that suggested skipping that upgrade are recommending upgrading to PSE5.

Since I have to wait to purchase it anyway, I will be paying close attention to everything I read about it - especially from those that belong to this forum.

Got my fingers crossed that it lives up to the early reviews! :)

Like Jodi I have often skipped releases. So I jumped form 2 to 4 withgout ever loadin 3. Ihave been very happy with 4 but from what I read 5 ihas a lot of very attractive features. I am especially looking forward to the curves actions.

It does have somethings that CS2 doesn't have like the Art Work and Effects. Maps etc ... but who knows what they will add into the next versions of CS.

Wendy - Thanks so much for letting me know about the differences. :)

Hi Roger ...

... but the other way around is that CS2 has a lot that PSE5 doesn't have :D :D

Wendy,

And I'm sure that CS3 will have even more than CS2 and PSE5 combined. :D

I have to admit... I keep thinking I wonder what CS3 is going to have.

Wendy. Do you have CS2? Compared to PSE4.... How much more advanced are we taking? Is it just a learning curve or is it truly for the advanced?

Kimi there is a LOT more to cs2! The basic set up is very similar but there's MORE of everything. More tools, more options, more capabilities. I have barely touched the tip of the iceburg when it comes to learning cs2. I find myself gravitating to it more and more than elements now though. I can work pretty easily between the two but there are some things that are in different places and that gets frustrating once in a while. If you ever notice when Dave and Matt do their tutorials and some times they fumble looking for something.........that's why! I think for a lot of people who just want to do basic stuff, elements is really all you need. CS2 can be a bit overwhelming. I think getting to know elements pretty well before making that jump really helped. So does having lots of books on the subject help.

Elements is more home based user friendly with lots of frames, styles and effects etc. There isn't near as much in PS because of course you should make your own. (I haven't got that far yet!)

Thanks for the input Pauline. :)

Really I love the styles and effects. I want easy but good. Make any sense? The art stuff they are showing for 5. Where it is kinda like a clipart and you insert your photo is a complete waste for me. I would never use it. (i know... never say never) but that is not what I am after. I want my pictures to look good of course but it is the creative aspect that I love!

I am torn... :o

I know nothing about CS2 so your input was very helpful. :D

I kind of feel that way, too, BUT, I used to use PaintShopPro and it has a feature called "picture tubes" where you can save little "ornaments" and stamp them in varying sizes (kind of like brushes) and I really liked that. In PSP you could make your own and save them and then just use them whenever you wanted, so I'm hoping you will be able to save your own "clipart" and use it with this feature. I'm really anxious to try the curves and the black and white consversion tools.

Bama, that's a wonderful comparison you posted-I've never seen that before. I consider the full version from time to time, but I don't really need it-I would like to have the path/text on a path tool, but that's not something I would use all that often (I don't think). I do have copy of PS7 I bought on ebay but I've never installed it because after I bought it, someone told me there isn't a path tool in that version (it was pretty cheap, so no big loss). There are so many other things I can find to spend my money on, but I know I'll have a weak moment sometime and do it!

I have just read through all of the messages in this thread and just realised how lucky us Mac users are:rolleyes: No angst, money in the bank as Adobe don't want it, no new features to worry about. We can just stick to good ol' PSE4.

So relaxing:D

It would be great if that was updated to show the differences between CS2 and PSE4 as both have changed significantly. Soon we will need a comparison between CS3 and PSE5. :D

Yes Roger as I see quite a few of the NO's in the cs column are now YESES for cs2.
