View Full Version : PSE4 not deleting files after backup

After I backup my files to CD, and I've specified "Move" and that it's ok to delete them from my hard disk, they're still there!

Anyone else experience this problem?

Hello Helmar
Could you confirm how you are seeing the files-in Windows Explorer or Organizser? A Burn>Move command removes the original file but leaves the thumbnail in Organizer. If you click this icon, it will ask for the corresponding disk.

If you check the folder in Explorer before and after, the files should not be on your hard disk anymore. If this is not the case, please post back and we'll see if we can trace down the problem.

Thanks for your post!

They are indeed still on my hard drive in their original location. The file sizes for the .CR2 are just over 12,000 KB and for the .JPG files between 4,000 and 5,500 KB, so these are not thumbnails.

Hi Helmar

I just had a quick peek. My .crw files are in the 7 MB range and my .jpg files are in the 2.5 MB range.
Just verifying.:)

Humm, interesting?
Can we walk through your steps.

Both the CR2 and JPG files are showing in Organizer.
Files are selected (blue box around the files you want)
File>Backup
Screen 1-Copy/Move radio button is green
Screen 2-Offline Media Move Files is checked
Pop Up asking for disk to confirm write speeds
Screen 3-Destination screen where you point to your CD/DVD drive

Have you looked at the disk and confirmed the files were written to the disk?

Hmmmm, that's interesting.

Most of these files were edited and are now .psd files (version sets).

It's the original .CR2 and .JPG files that have been left on my hard drive.

The .psd files are the ones that were moved to CD, and they are indeed on the backup CD's.

If I try to edit one of the images from the organizer, I get the expected message "Some of the ... items are stored offline ..."

So apparently, the backup backed up the .psd files but left the original .cr2 and .jpg files on my hard drive.

Is that the way it's supposed to work with version sets? If so, should I now manually delete the .cr2 and .jpg files?

I would hold off deleting the files from your hard drive until we get some clarification.

I'll admit I rarely use version sets, especially with a RAW format starter (I believe the CR2 files are RAW format, correct?). So if your workflow RAW>PSD>JPG?

When you look in Organizer, is there a stack icon in the upper right corner of these photos? Can you see the RAW images or the JPG images in Organizer if you click Show Version Sets (or whatever the command is). I ask as only files in Organizer will be backed up.

Yes, CR2 are raw files on the 5D and my workflow is RAW>PSD>JPG.

There is a stack icon in the upper right corner of the photo's, as well as a "Backed up" symbol:

When I right click on an image and select Version set\Reveal items in version set, I do see both the .psd and the .cr2 versions.

Everything looks fine.
I wonder if the answer is front of me and I just don't see it.
I noticed on screen 2 of the Burn option is a section for Copy/Move All Files in a Version Set-is this checked?
I also did a Forum Search and have found a user who I think does what you are doing. I sent him a message and asked him to jump in.

That's a DEFINATE maybe. I can't remember whether I checked that or not, so I'll have to wait 'til I do it again and check.

As to the items I've already backed up. Since all of the .psd files were backed up, and since I always use layers to make any changes (which can always be removed), is there any reason I should NOT remove the original .CR2 and .jpg files?

My hesitation is the version set part of the scenerio. I'm thinking it would be better to have all the parts of sandwich, now we just have the peanut butter.

The JPGs are not too worrisome; they can always be re-created from the PSDs. The CR2 files are your original negatives and most photographers abhor the thought of losing these. Do you have them backed up somewhere or will you be removing the only copy?

As I'd mentioned, what remained on my hard drive after the backup/move were the .jpg and .cr2 files.

It sure sounds like I didn't check that version set box.

I'll manually backup the .jpg and .cr2 files to a cd and then delete them from my hard drive.

It sure would be nice if that check box defaulted to on.

Thanks for all your help!

I know I am kind of butting in.:D

I am wondering if the Raw files were ever in the organizer. Whenever you save you have to uncheck the save in organizer to have it not add.
If you are not using the Adoibe downloaer or the orgainzer is is not watching your Raw folder then that could be why they were not added/backed up.
No idea about the jpgs though.

Just a thought. :)

Garyk:

The raw .CR2 files were in the organizer when they were first imported from my camera. As soon as I plug my memory card in, the organizer pops up and allows me to import all or some of the files from the card.

Then, after editing, I created a version set, which left me with a .CR2 original version and a .PSD edited version.

Then, when I backed them up (and probabily forgot to check the version set box), only the .PSD files were backed up to CD and deleted. Because the version set box was NOT checked, the original .CR2 files were left on my hard drive, but not in the catalog.

At least I THINK this is what happened.

It was just a thought. A lot of people don't bring the the Raw files straight into the organizer. I was hoping that was the case... at least it would have solved one issue. :)
