Finally have a story to tell with a scrapbook page.
Since I've just started this scrapbooking/memory management concept I'm pretty much faking my way through it! :)
Wondering what you guys think.
Needs more? Less? Differnet?

Be tough, I can take it!

I love it! Talk about telling a story! It reminds me of those days when my two boys were learning to ride their bikes. Thanks for sharing.

I think it looks great - wonderful use of drop shadows - just enough in different places to give the page real depth!

Great job! :)

kerriann love your scrap book page. I am of the thought that less is more and it's just perfect. Not too busy and the story is there with those 4 pictures. Great job!

Thanks My Friends! Your comments are very sweet and I appreciate them greatly.

But seriously, is there anything someone would do differently? Does the bike track thing look really bad....should I redo it? (homemade brush)

Kerri,

It is brilliant and I love it ...

It tell a lovely story. It has good images, good use of colour, well put together and the tyre marks are a really great touch.

I just can't think of anything that would improve it ... and think that you have done a first rate job :)

Hi KerriAnn,
I really love how your page tells the story in pictures. The last one shows the most progress, riding alone!

Just a suggestion, but you might want to get a shot of a bike wheel and maybe layer a portion of it into the background at a low opacity, just to give the page some added depth.

Or add some smaller images as accents, like a reflector light, or a closeup of the design on his helmet, or his hand gripping the handlebar.

Nice work! And what a great idea for a page. I've never seen one devoted to learning to ride a bike. You're a trendsetter!

That's great ! Funny, I was thinking pretty much the same that Jan was as far as the background. Tho I kind of also missed seeing a nice close up of his smiling face with his helmet on. Of course this would suggest that you'd either have to cut one of the other images and replace it or find a way to add it. All in all it is really a nice display and I'm sure he'll cherish this memory for a while...'specially now that you got it displayed this way.

Thanks Wendy. "tYre" ?

Great ideas Jan. Was trying to figure out "accents" (aka frou frou). I like the reflector and helmet design suggestions. But want to do it without getting too cluttered.

Yep Jodi, as soon as he saw the print he wanted it in his room....
Might play with it some before printing for him and grampa.

Kerri,

I am just so excited that the forum is back that my fingers are going all over the place.

On a serious note I was impressed with your page ... Jan's idea of a wheel is a good one. I may pinch that idea for future use :)

I love it Kerri.

I was thinking the same as Jan and Jodi, but I wasn't sure if it would be too cluttered or not. Maybe try a couple of embelisments and repost, then we can see which we like better.

Hi Kerri,

Your layout is great...very clean and crisp...and yes, you've captured the story!

Okay, here's version 2

I really couldn't figure out how to do "accents" without it looking cluttered.
If anyone wants to play around with it they are quite welcome.

I have to agree with Gary on this one Kerri. First one was better. I found this one too distracting with the tire in the background. I would leave it as it was. It made a lovely statement. Of course, like Gary, no expert here.

Kerri

I think my grey ones fall out, thats why it's getting a little sparse on top.

I'm thinking I might give this scrapbooking a try. Anybody know where I can find a watermelon background? I have found a few but they were for web pages. Will these be ok to print?

Gary.

Good idea, but I was thinking more of a pink (watermelon colour) background with seeds or some shapes on it. I'll keep looking.

Kerri, I love the first one also. Did you create the entire layout? I got to learn that one for sure! I bought a scrapbooking software package but have not even installed it yet.

Keep up the good work! ...cuse me, Play!

Kerri,

I also prefer the first one ... and found the second one just a bit too cluttered :(

Kerri,

I have just had a thought ... try this on the wheel layer.

Desaturate it (or make it a duo tone) then reduce the opacity of the layer so that it only just shows ... maybe to around 10%.

Wendy

kerriann85
June 23rd, 2005, 11:13 AM
Ok, wheel desaturated.
Version 3

http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?pic=1FnvLQP3WSejH8Gtdito9sXJvHNny

(I didn't spend much time with the wheel in v 2. lowered the opacity of the layer but didn't think to desaturate first. Good one Wendy.)

Dixie, yes, my own layout creation. Knew I wanted those four pix so I stuck them all in first, then moved them around, Decided on a "cement" background, quick and easy just color and noise. Found a font I liked with rounded letters, played with leyer styles to get a nice bike frame tooby look.
Tossed in a little dropped shadow.....and Ta Da!

I ran across a nice little forum listing some "rules" for scrapbook pages that was quite interesting. (not that I followed any)

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5777

It was entitled "Page Design Advice from the Artistically Challenged" I knew it was written just for me! :)

Kerri,

It does look better like that ... but on balance I still that I prefer the original version :)

Kerri, or a first date ??

imagine that...

Pauline
June 23rd, 2005, 08:13 PM
dates??? Do they exist any more???
Be careful Kerri, little girls these days are after boys!! My son is only 12 and he has this one girl calling for him all the time. He says she isn't his girlfriend, but I wonder if she knows that! One night she called 3 times in just over an hour until I said, "enough"!! I was trying to work. (well okay, I was going over tutorials and they were the movie ones and the phone is sitting on my desk) She's gone to England now for 2 weeks so the phone is quiet.

As for me. I've got myself in another mess. I installed the "free" Corel KPT collection of filters today..........24 filters to explore. Some I get, but quite a few look like I'll be searching help! I really would have liked a little tutorial to come with it!! Watch out next challenge!!!!

I think tagging along, with camera in tow, on the first date, is a wonderful idea. I'm sure the kids will go for it.

As far as driving lessons go... who is going to have a steady enough hand to take pictures?

Awww ... I think that is quite cute :) I bet he is missing her !!

Do let us know how you get on with the filters ... they sound good.

Gary, that is too funny !

Pauline, I'm scared to death of when that starts happening here. My daughter will be seven at the end of next month and my hub and I always tell her she can't have a boyfriend t'il she's 30. She knows darn right well that aint the way she sees it. She's in grade 1 and already talking about boyfriends....grrrrr. Not that she has one or thinks she has one but i certainly was not thinking about that when i was seven ! Kids today are growing up way too fast. It's really scary. So anyways, I do the best I can at setting her straight about the 'bad' boys of the world...our neighbour's kid ! He's 9 and keeps asking my daughter to be his girlfriend. I butt right in every time and set him straight but he still tries. <sigh>

Funny you should mention girls....
The neighbor gal just came over to get my 10-year old to play. Luckily(for me at least) his 5 year old brother always tags along. (Gary, I guess he'll be the one with the camera?) ;) I see them kicking a ball around in her backyard.

As for the driving part..... I grew up a farm girl driving since about 14. Since he's now a city kid maybe he can take driver's ed in school and keep me completely out of it???

Jodi/Pauline

My daughter is 16 and it is most certainly an interesting time. Her boyfriends drive now, and I remember the good old days. She is a pretty good kid and I'm not complaining at all. I just tell her "boys are liars and girls are gullible" and I use every opportunity to prove it when she tells me stuff about her girlfriends.
It's the skimpy undies in the laundry that dads don't need to see. :o

Oh geeze ! ....thank goodness I still got another 10 years to go (HOPEFULLY) before i have to start 'really' being overly paranoid and worrying about her and stuff like that. What is truly scary is that I remember what it is to be a teenager...my poor mother ! AND ya know what they say...paybacks are a -----!

I have to place my vote for No. 1 also. The simplicity of the design is wonderful as the emphasis is on the "story".

Kerri, I have a couple of great ones of my son in the backyard pool with his birthday suit on....front and back ! He was about 2. It was the day he found his spirit ! His true devilish self came out that day. I'll never forget it.

Pauline
June 23rd, 2005, 10:24 PM
 Jodi if you think you have another 10 years to go before you have to start worrying, well, I think you'd better give your head a shake!!! Don't mean to burst your bubble girl, but you really aren't in the real world!! I have a 12 yr old boy, 14 yr old & 16 yr old girls!! I give you 7 years max!!

The 14 yr old was always boy crazy and well her pick of a boyfriend........she likes the bad boys!

My 16 year old started going out with a boy 3 years older than her last year and that really caused me some pain......especially since he had a car! They are still going out and he is fabulous. He is now 19 and working full time. He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't do drugs and doesn't lie. He respects all the house rules and I feed him regularily. He's like family and I haven't been able to scare him away. He has been a God send and a very good influence. I think we'll keep him!

Now Gary...........as for the underware........... I have to say that I'm not impressed that both my girls wear those thong things and I can't for the life of me see how they could be comfortable, but I can't do a whole lot about it!! I don't even like them wearing those skimpy tank tops to school, but EVERYONE wears them!! I wish the schools had a stricter dress coat. BUT go in any store and what do you find?

Wendy, the filters are pretty neat, but I think they might have to be like mini lessons! The come with about a 24 page tutorial, which I wish was in book form. I had reading things on the computer all the time. Iguess I could print them out but that would be a heck of a lot of printing!

Wendy

Pauline,

One of the really good things about a Mac is that you have a "floating desktop" so you can have several things open (and see them) at the same time.

So if I am using Elements to do a tutorial or want to consult a PDF I can just close the file browser and in the space where the file browser was I can then see the PDF on the desktop without having to move out of Elements. Takes a bit if getting used to but its really handy for checking out PDF's whilst you are working.

Hey it's the pits being on the east coast day light saving time zone. Most of the action here is after I go to bed.

Regarding children...treasure every moment you have with them. Mine are both grown now and have moved 3 & 4 hours away. Still single but have very active lives of their own. We talk often but I do so miss them.

Thank goodness for holidays... at least for now. When they have families of their own I'm sure we will have to manuever around more family tradition schedules.
