What a shame, my dear hubby left his camera out all night in the rain last night.....
Being the sympathetic and generous soul that I am, I said he can have mine:rolleyes:
Which means I will need a new camera:D :D :D
Never had an SLR but signed up for a Digital Photography Class starting in September so thinking about the Canon EOS 350 (or 400D if funds stretch/worth the extra) (Rebel in the States, I understand). Seems a good time to make the leap into SLRs (DSLR of course).
One thing I have realised using Elements is that you can work miracles correcting, cropping and highlighting the stronger points of a photo - but good material to start with is so much better.

Why Linda that certainly was a kind-hearted thing to do. (You're sure he 'left' it out in the rain and someone didn't actually 'put' it out in the rain ... right? ;) Lovely gesture regardless.)
Sounds like you have a wonderful dilemma ahead of you ... I'm sure you'll get lots of good advice.

When I first started reading the thread, I thought "OH, NO!!!" Then I started chuckling when I finished!
I also have the Rebel XT and also love it! I have just recently ventured off the AUTO setting.....I am really enjoying learning the camera too!

Linda, absoluely genius. Wish I thought that fast this weekend. I have the Canon Digital Rebel 300D an I love it. But, there are nicer ones now since mine, like the Rebel XT and the new XTI that is coming out and others. Anyway, this weekend I didn't think as fast as you. On our camping trip instead of staying at the camper and watching one of Matt's videos I downloaded, I decided to go out on the canoe with my husband and son. I figured it was a beautiful day and a beautiful river, great photo opp, right. Whenever I go near water with my camera I put it in a ziplock bag and carry it in a small backpack. Ok, now to the point. My brillant husband decides he want to go UP river because he has a trolling motor and he can make it. Yeah right. So as the canoe starts tipping and taking on water and I jump out, I look back and my backpack is sinking and everything in the canoe is starting to float away. I grab the pack and save the camera leaving my son and my Yorkie for my husband to save. In one hand I have a backpack and the other I have the canoe rope and save both.
If I had been as fast thinking as you I could have quilted him into a brand new camera and zoom lens and filters and all. The backpack went under a few times but the ziplock bags saved it all. I doubt that the trip down river over rocks and fast traveling water would have much helped. It wasn't a waterproof pack.
Luckily we did manage to retrieve most of our stuff.

I have to say, part of the reason I offered to help out my hubby so quickly was because of a recent thread here, which prompted me to take a look at the Canon EOS 350/Rebel - so the seed was planted and growing fast.
My existing camera is a Canon Powershot S60, which is a great camera for a point and shoot so was pretty sure I would stick to Canon anyway.
Kim - what an adventure!! Glad everyone is OK. A ziplock bag, now thats a good idea. We get a lot of rain here, so worth a thought - especially as hubby is considering geting a canoe next summer:eek:
Will keep you posted on new camera and no doubt start filling the forum with my new efforts. Apparently I have to wait until beginning of October though:(

So sad to hear about the camera's demise. :( On the other hand - my daughter did the same thing and luck for her the camera was fine. We just let it sit for several days and dry out and it worked just fine. (hers was a Sony DSC P3). Of course - that is our little secret and your hubby need not find out it MIGHT actually be okay. :D

Funny, I think I'm going to leave my husband out in the rain....
Was at the Mall yesterday snoopin' around in RITZ CAMERA shop....small bookshelf had about 12 books on the Rebel and 1 on Nikon and about half dozen on digital Photography...maybe less. Rebel seems to get alot of attention. Gotta love that ' Canon Rebel for Dummies ' book. Is there any topic that the ' Dummies ' books don't cover ????

Norm, it's OK, you can leave hubbies in the rain - they tend to be quite waterproof:D :D (more so than cameras:eek: )

Jodi--I don't know if there is a dummies for dummies book yet or not.:D
But don't do like I did and drop your relatively new cell phone in the toilet---It did work after drying out!:o

Sherry! I would have been okay if I had only washed my husband's cell phone, but I also dried it. I think that did the trick. His shirt pocket DID feel heavy when I was doing laundry...

Sherrie, or is that Sherry? Yes there probably is a ' dummies for dummies ' book...and if there isn't then maybe there should be. I can think of one person in particular that could stand to read it page per page...no, not my husband...but YES ' it ' is male ! I know I have seen the ' sex for dummies ' book at the bookstore.
