I viewed the 1st lesson and figured out the cascading thing. Only problem is when I drag the second photo over the first, the dragged photo is enlarged. When I try to resize it or zoom out, both photos are reduced. There is no link activated between them. Does anyone know how to reduce the size of the layered photos independantly?

Hi Joe

Welcome to the forums. :)

First off, the reason one photo is bigger than the other is because they are different resolutions. Either a setting on your camera was changed or yu got them from different locations. Not a problem.

What you have to do is zoom way out (at least as far as you need:)). Go to maximize mode and try making the whole thing about half of the screen size using ctrl-(minus key).
Now pick the move tool and highlight the layer that is too big. You should now have a bounding box with the drag handles on it. Hold the shift key down (keeps it in proportion) and drag a corner to the right size.

I explained it a little awkward but I hope it helps. :)

Hi Joe -

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like the two photos you are working with have different resolutions. Make sure they are both 72 (or 300 or whatever... you can do that by edit>image>resize ) and you should be in good shape.

Bill

Doesn't the dragged image take on the resolution of the dragged to image? or am I mixing something up?

hi Gary ...

The images keep their own resolution ... :)

Wendy,
I do believe what Gary said is correct...If you have a 300px resolution image and drag a 72px resolution image into the 300px image the combined image becomes a 300px resolution. I just did that and flattened the image, then checked the image size and the resolution was 300px. As individual images they would keep their own resolution, but not when combined.

Hi Dorrie ...

Sorry I didn't mean it like that ..

Joe was dragging a high resolution image onto a low resolution one and it was dragging over as very large.

What I mean was that it keeps its own size ... its resolution drops to the one of the image it moves to but to compensate it increases its physical size. I really meant that it doesn't lose any pixels ... sorry I didn't explain it very well :)

Wendy,
Well you certainly have now....I knew I couldn't possibly be wiser than you.:D:D It just goes to show it's all in how someone is interpreting something.

Thanks for the added explanation.

Guys, does this mean you should always make sure all the pictures you are dragging into another (to make a montage, etc.) are in the same resolution or does it matter.

Hi Norma

It really doesn't matter. :)

The thing you have to keep in mind is, that as per above, if you take a high res pic and drag it to a low res one, the high res one will become physically bigger. So if you are dragging it on top then the lower one will be totally hidden until you make it smaller... usually just by using the free transform or the move tool.

I guess I didn't explain it right :).

At least Dorrie knew what I meant :D.. thanks Dorrie. :)

Thanks Gary. I'll remember that now because I had the same problem and I usually had to make smaller. I think it's easier just to make sure they are the same so I don't run into the problem. There is so much to remember. I still haven't done anything fancy like all the wonderful galleries that are out there. Maybe I just don't have that imagination. The layers class is really helping me though. Much better than reading a manual though I have about 5 of them but I'm getting more from the class.

Norma - You have a wonderful gallery ... don't sell yourself short. The meerkat photo is great!

Good luck with Ernesto ... sounds like it may have given you a break. Hang on!

Thanks Bill. Mine are just plain photos but I am getting ready to do some more fancy stuff so I'm hoping to upload a few soon. I'm addicted to those Meerkats. I even watch the "Meerkat Manor" show on Animal Planet on Friday nights. They follow this family around and it's so cute to watch!
