View Full Version : PSE 3.0 & 4.0 on same computer?

Last April I bought PSE 4.0 for my Mac. Last week I got a Wacom tablet that had PSE 3.0 bundled with it.

If I add 3.0 to the same computer will I have any problems? Will they run as completely separate programs or might there be some interference between the two? I'm happy with 4.0 and don't want to mess things up, but I'd like to be able to play with Grant's Tools using 3.0 if possible.

Thanks.

No problem running both and I think that on a Mac you can have both open at the same time (something you can't do on a PC).

I hope that I wrong, but does not Wacom Graphire 4 come with Photoshop Elements 3.0 for WINDOWS (NOT MAC). You say you have a Mac. Is it a MacBookPro with BootCamp to allow you to use Mac and Windows on the same computer?

Assuming that I am wrong about what you have, I have added the 4.0, after the 3.0 version Windows. No problems. I think that I recall that there might be an Organizer problem doing 4.0 than 3.0 installation, but that is Windows.

As far as I know, Photoshop Elements 3.0 for Mac has the Organizer, but the 4.0 version has not. Instead in 4.0 there is Adobe Bridge, no Organizer.

Please let us know the outcome.

Hi Atoris ...

Yes you can indeed have both open at the same time on the Mac :)

I find it handy to do just that ... it means when someone ask a question I can switch to the right version ...

Wendy and Tony,

I did some follow up on Windows versus Mac versions of software bundled with the Graphire products. I know that there are Mac drivers that can be installed for the Wacom Pen/Tablet. But, the bundled software Windows/Mac business confused me.

When I installed my Graphire 3 and its bundled Photoshop Elements software, I did not recall seeing a check off spot for Windows or Mac. There was not any. I just went back and looked at the box. Up at the top "in small print", it says Systems Requirements:for running Photoshop Elements, Windows 2000, XP, or MacOS9.2.2 or 10.2 & higher. Yet there was only one installation disc that came for the bundled software.

I am left to assume that if I took this same disc and inserted into a Mac, I would get the Mac version of Photoshop Elements installed? Under the category of "How Stuff Works", how can you do that? Can one disc be translated and read by both types of operating system to generate the corresponding Windows or Mac versions?

As you can tell, I have always been a Windows person. Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi ATR ...

Now bear with me on this one as I may not be 100% right :D

If the disk is one that starts up when you put it in the computer then it will automatically start up in Window or Mac depending on what you have.

If it doesn't and you look on the disk then Windows people will only see the Windows files ... but us Mac folks can see both lots

Its to do with what the operating system of the pc can view :) (I think :o )

(We really need Ray ... he talks Windows more fluently that I do)

Just a question for the multi-elemental ones. :D Particularily Mac.

Do you keep third party filters in a separate folder (I know you can with Windows) so you can access them from both programs, or do Macs see them anyaway?

I have both PSE 4 and PSE 2 on mine. the only problem I have is when I upload my photo's Both come up and want to load the pictures. But i find that even though PSE 2 dosen't have the features of 4 there are some good plugins that don't work with 4 that do on 2.
I don't have a wacom yet but am looking for Sept. to go crazy.

Hi Gary ...

I don't really use plug ins in Elements and I only install odd ones if there is a query ... but I currently have the prefs set so that Elements accesses my CS2 plug ins folder.

Randy,
I think you should be able to turn one of the two off under Preferences, if you wish.

Thanks.
I wondered if the Mac would pick it up automatically or not. :)

I have a folder set up and I have everything point to that. I like to keep them separate so If I have to delete anything I know what came with Elements and what didn't. Also If I am explaining something I know if it is a built in thing or not.

Hi Gary ...

Oh that is good idea ... :)

I sometimes have problems when I am doing tutorials working out which things come with Elements and which I have picked up from elsewhere ... so that idea certainly would help me :)
