Hello. I am a new member to the forum and have been reading the threads for 2 days now but have not seen anything remotely similar to my problem. I think it is wonderful that people are helping each other! :)

When I lasso an object, I get the marching ants, but when I try to cut or copy a red x box shows up saying "Could not perform cut/copy command because no pixels were selected." Sometimes a warning box appears that says, "Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selected edges will not be visible."

The book is not any help...I thought I was doing things correctly and have followed directions, etc. Thanks to anyone who can guide me!;)

Hi Dusky ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

Well that could be one or two things ...

If you have more than one layer in your image then you could actually be on a layer that really does have nothing in the place where your selection is.

Or ... Select the lasso then look at the top of the screen. Is there a feather set in the box, if so just change it to zero. A feather makes some of the selected pixels semi transparent and if its set too high then Elements can't see any pixels at all.

Do let us know if either of those sort if out ... if not we will think of some other things :)

Hi Wendy, Thanks for replying. I made sure I was on a correct layer and I backed the feather down to 0-still the same: "Could not perform cut command because no pixels were selected." Trying other tools brought the -"warning: No Pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible." I am brand new to Photoshop so I am at a complete loss. I belong to a local club that meets tomorrow so I am going to ask around. I also bought 2 books today on PE 4.0 to dive into. One is by Barbara Brundage, whom I've seen on these forums answering questions so I know I'll get help! I thank all of you.

Hi Dusky ...

First thing is try this ...

Get the lasso then look up to the top left hand corner of the screen you should see a small lasso thumbnail. Click on it and select Reset Tool.

Then create a new image File>New>Blank File make it 500 pixels x 500 pixels white background.
Now create a new layer Layer>New Layer
and fill that with black Edit>Fill

Next get the lasso and make a shape
then do Edit>Delete

Has that worked ?

If not try the same thing but use the rectangular marquee instead.

Does that work ?

If neither work then I thing we need to look at either the install or deleting the prefs.

Thank you Wendy! It worked, though I do not know why it wasn't to begin with...I guess that is not important though. :)

Hi ...

Oh I am so pleased that it is now working OK ... it could have been the reset tool that sorted it out :)
