I am trying to merge two photos. I would like to fade one into the other. I tried the Select>feathering. I put in 15 pixels after I selected the picture with my Marquee tool and nothing happened. I made sure I was on the right layer and everything. HELP??

Caroleen, after you select you marquee tool use the feather option on that tool bar not the one on the very top tool bar, Hope that makes sense.

I did select the feather and put 20 px in the litle box. Nothing happens.

Hi Caroleen

Not too sure here, I rarely merge using the feather.
One thing I do try if something doesn't seem to work properly is take it to an extreme limit.
In this case set the feather to 200 and see if it is noticable. It could be you have a high resolution picture and the feather is just not noticable. a 10 pixel feather on a 300 ppi photo is not even 1/8 of a an inch.

Sorry don't feel like doing math tonight :)

Your picture size was my next question like Gary said. You could also try using the selection brush instead and select a soft brush, just make sure it is a large enough pixel for the image size.

Hi Carolleen ...

If you go to the Subscriber area>Tutorials you will find a tutorial called Blending two images together (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/tutorials/tw_blendimages.php)
It shows you how to use a layer mask and a gradient to blend images. You can also use a soft brush on the mask instead of the gradient.

Of you are already logged on to the subscriber area then the link should work :)

Wendy, thats a problem because when I go to the Subscriber area I put in my User ID and password. There is a message that says the ID and password do not match so I haven't been able to get on that site yet. I've emailed them but they say it should work. Problems! Problems! haha

Hi ...

When you subscribed to the newsletter did they send you an email with your password in it ??

Its quite some time since I subscribed so I'm not sure now how they send it ..

Wendy, they sent me a UserID name and password. When I put it in for the Subscriber area it says that it doesn't go together. Well, that's what they sent me. They emailed me back, after my letter to them, and told me I needed to register again. I did, when I got to login again, the message came up. So I can not get past the registration. They also said that I couldn't use the Forums but as you can see, I can get on to those. Apparently no one can do anything till Monday but it takes quite a while to get an email back from them. So we'll see what happens.

Hi Caroleen ...

Oh that sounds really strange ... on this site you can use the forum without subscribing its the NAPP site that the forum is in the subscriber area. So I don't understand what they mean by that.

It maybe worth telephoning them on Monday ... The Customer Service No is (866) 808-2793. I'm sure they will be able to sort it out for you fairly quickly :)

Thanks Wendy, I will try that. Its been sort of a mess. I sure have enjoyed this Forum though. Everyone has been so helpful and nice to respond. Like someone else said they had asked a question on another site and never got an answer, well, I did too. Its nice to get on and know someone like you can help. Thanks.

Carorleen, I had this same problem and it turns out the signin is totally separate between the forums and and the other areas. If you are using the forum ID and password it only works in forum. Don't know if this is your problem or not but worth checking!

Caroleen,

I share your frustration. Sounds like we’re having similar problems with Feathering. And also with accessing the Subscriber Tab….ID and PW don’t match. Aghhhh….

I’m a newbie to the Forums……sure hope someone can give me a Hint as to what I’m doing wrong.

I need some help with feathering, blurring, or edge smoothing……I don’t seem to be able to complete the action, because of commands (Feather, Anti-alias) are grayed out.

I have a composite image consisting of a central photo with five separate photos (layers) positioned adjacent to each other in the overall composite.

I want to “feather” or “smooth” or “blur” the edges of the corner photos while the center photo remains unchanged.

First of all, …….should I do the feathering or smoothing of each of the corner photos before they are placed side by side in the composite?

I would like to think that I could accomplish these separate feathering actions after the photos have been placed into the composite, and then select each photo in the layer control palette. When I do that however, the “Feather” command in the Select pull down menu is grayed out.

This is so frustrating; …..Adobe PhotoDeluxe was so easy!

Thanks in advance,

Bartles

Hello Caroleen;

I had a similar problem when I subscribed also... I had set up a user name with a space in it. I could get into the forum but was denied access to the subscriber area. I finally decided to insert an underscore "_" between my first name and last initial & used that to set up a new user name. It worked but I don't know if was because I had a space where it shouldn't be. So right now I have a user name with a space that allows me to access the forum and I have a user name with an underscore that will give me access to the subscriber area. Actually the later will get me into the forum area as well. Not sure if all this helps as it looks like you don't have any spaces in your user name but like Wendy says give them a call.

Good Luck... don't give up because your missing a lot of good stuff in the subscriber area! :)

Just looked over a tut for feathering images together today. She used the lasso tool to select her subject and feathered 100 pixels. She also explained that when you feather it feathers the inside and outside. So that would be 50 on each. (I didn't know that?) When she was finished it looked great. There is one other thing. When you are feathering your selection it will not show until you click OK. A fast way is to right click on your selection and feather is there.

I'm sorry Bartles, can't say I'll be a lot of help. still haven't had enough time to play with the program. To me it is a very difficult program. Hopefully someone can guide us to a tutorial thats worth watching. I know that vtc.com has a video tutorial but you have to pay $30.00 a month but can view it as many times as you like. Maybe you can try that and teach us both.

After reading your post I gave it a try. I did it really fast so the quality isn't very good. But, if it's what you have in mind I'd be happy to tell you how I did it. Be forewarned, I'm self taught so my ways usually aren't the best ways. Russ

I think I've figured the feathering out. After you select your Marquee tool, set your pixel size in the tool bar and make your selection. I set mine at 120 px. so that I tell if it was working. Then hit Ctrl J and it makes a new layer which is feathered. Its like magic!! Or you can right click after you make your selection, hit feather there and then Ctrl J. Hope this helps you too. I've played with this thing till I'm cross-eyed. As you say "difficult program". I've been spending hours (and I mean hours) playing with this program for 2 weeks and still feel extremely confused at times. Hope this helps. Carol
