Advice from the experts please

I was working on a project yesterday where I made my own patterned background and then added 4 photos to it, each on its own layer. I then made a new layer. I went to the marquee tool to make a "frame" for each picture, trying to follow the tutorial on the multiple frames. BUT, the active layer kept switching to the background and it moved. Not sure what I did wrong. It ended up working by a new layer per frame. BUT not the way the tutoiral showed. Any help would be appreciated.

If you look you will see a box called Auto Select Layers, make sure that it is unselected. Hope this helps.

Hi M,

I don't believe you can make a selection with the marquee tool and apply any effects to that selection on a blank layer. Which tutorial are you following?

It was multiple borders. I could only make 1 little frame thing. When I tried more than 1 all kinds of stuff moved.
Where is the 'auto select layer" so I can check on it.
I sure appreciate the help.

The Auto Select Layer box is on the bar at the top of your photo work area (I don't know the proper name for it). When you have selected the move tool it'll be next to it on the bar :)

Yes Mel, it was the auto select box as suggested. Thank you.
It was sitting right there and I didn't even notice.
I'm sure I'll be returning soon for more advice from the experts!
