Hello,

Can someone explain in "dumb speak" what the Compressed Bits per pixel in the camera data 2 means?

I'm comparing a couple of photos and this is one of the areas I’m not sure of. Is the higher the number “better?”

Thanks for the help!

I am not an expert on this topic, but the following is an abridged version of my understanding of it.

From your description you are in File Information and are viewing one of the pieces of information that traveled with the photo from camera to Photoshop Elements. At least in the Elements 3.0 that I have, you can only view not change the number that is "read only" file information.

The whole matter involves the number of colors/intensities that can be represented for the image on a computer screen. You get into bit-depth expressed as bit per channel, bit per pixel. The terminology is often confusing. The data generated at the camera sensor level can be reduced by JPEG compression. Throw in JPEG compression and you can get compressed bits per pixel. The larger the bit per pixel number, the more colors that can be represented, but then the file size becomes an issue. There are other tonal considerations.

Below is one from many articles on the subject.
