I just have to share this story with you...last Thursday we went to Manhattan, got off the bus at Port Authority and started walking towards the Empire State Building. I was mesmerised, didn't know which way to look first, trying to get some good shots I kept looking up, and that was my downfall. literally. I tripped on the pavement, had a relatively soft landing on my youngest daughter (we both ended up slightly bruised that's all) but my poor camera with it's relatively new 28-135 mm lens went flying through the air and landed rather heavily about 12 feet away:eek: It wouldn't work and I kept on thinking about all the photos I wouldn't be able to take:(

I borrowed my daughter's Nikon Coolpix camera & set off up the ESB (dd had been up 3 weeks earlier but the view had been very limited and misty) and had to be content with using that. Was rewarded with amazing clear views and the pictures are actually very sharp, although I didn't feel comfortable using such a small camera. (Forgot to mention that my husband didn't come with as he'd done it already 26 years ago!)

When we got back down....my wonderful husband was there to greet me....with a brand new lens! I am now the proud owner of a 28-200mm lens with a wide angle/macro extension bit on the end. (The camera itself wasn't damaged, the lens had taken the full force of the fall) I was totally gobsmacked as I was prepared to be without my camera for the rest of my trip and can't get over his generosity (especially after all his comments about this 'time consuming hobby' which means his socks don't get washed and 'why are we eating dinner so late':))

Aren't I a lucky girl?

That is a great story. Husbands really can be so sweet sometimes. :)

This spring I had a somewhat similar situation. I went to our local horticultural gardens, Frederick Meijer Gardens, to see the annual butterfly display. I dropped my camera on the stone floor before I even got into the conservatory and destroyed both the camera (Nikon D70) and lens (Nikon 70-300). I was devastated and depressed for a week. My husband was the one to get on the phone to the insurance company (which did not cover it) and then online to search for a replacement. I had a group trip planned to Indiana, USA in 4 weeks to photograph the old covered bridges. After about a week of wallowing in the depression, I got a new camera and lens and not only went to Indiana but made it back to the gardens before the butterfly display was over. :o

Bayla- What a nice story. He gets big points, not just for getting the lens but for doing it so quickly.

Yes times have definitly changed!!!

I bet if a husband from the 50's would be transported to the future of today (2006) he would not know on what planet he landed  :D

Wonderful story though and I know that my husband would do just the same thing. He keeps telling me how happy he is for me that I have a 'hobby' that has become a true passion :)

If all husbands were like that and all wives were the same in return then wouldn't it be a wonderful world

My X husband wanted life to be like that but he also wanted me to have a pay cheque! He was happiest when I was on unemployment. Home all day and with a pay cheque every month.

Guess he wanted to have his cake and eat it too as they say here in the US. ;)

Byron - good comeback:D

Bayla - he is a sweetheart. That was a wonderful thing to do and being in New York he probably paid a premium for it too.

Bayla and Jan:

What great stories. What great guys you are married to! sometimes we get so caught up in our day to day lives that we forget how special we are to someone else. It's nice to see it. It also reminds me that we also should show it too! Maybe by surprising them with something for their hobby.....(a new weedwacker???:D ...just kidding!) BUT not something from that dutiful wife thing......AND I am just ignoring Byron and Gary!

Bayla, not that you know me from atom as I am new here, but I work in Manhattan. Third avenue and 55th street. If you ever do come back to NY, I may be able to get you to the top of our building (49 stories up). I took my relatives from Louisiana up and the photos were great. You could see out to Ct. Anyway, the offer is out there. Hope to see some of the photos you got in NY.

And that's a Good Husband....

I have a great husband too. He just doesn't pay attention---(I'm sure no one can relate to that;) ) I was excited on my birthday this month because I knew he was going to get me something nice. I was just looking for the right spot for the scanner I've been eyeing. I got a new gps device (costs way more than the scanner) but what could I say. He is thrilled with it:rolleyes: .

In fact, I feel guilty for even joking so here is a recent shot of him with my 2 girls. Gorgeous, huh?

I know about dropping cameras. I dropped mine at the start of a holiday in Asia. Fortunately it fell on my foot - no damage to the camera, but broke two toes. I hobbled for the next three weeks, but at least I had my camera. This was before the days of digitals. Jean
