View Full Version : Scrapbook Exchange Part II

There are nearly 400 posts in the original Scrapbook Exchange thread, so I hope you don't mind if I start a new thread. Who knew this would take off the way it did? Thanks Lynn for getting us started!
I will be moving next week & won't have time to upload kits again until 05 September 2006. This will give everyone an extra week to design some incredible kits. :D
Those of you who are participating have noticed that there are nearly 200 in one gallery & 175 items in the 2nd gallery (papers + embellishments). It is becoming quite cumbersome & I know it's difficult for those with dial-up.
When I upload again on the 5th, I may start a 3rd gallery. We may have to set a cut-off date for members to download the files in galleries 1 & 2 by mid-September to make room for more wonderful kits.
Also, I will be contacting those of you who have already participated with a link to try another method of uploading. (ScrappyGuy told me about YouSendIt.com & I think we may be using that for file transfer from you to me in the future. If you want to test it during the next few days, you can send a copy of your recent scrapbook zip files to yourself to see if it would be easier for you.
I look forward to getting settled so I can design some greeting cards with your beautiful cards. Thanks again for everyone who has participated.

Nita- Thanks again for all your work in keeping this going.
I am looking forward to seeing more creations from the kits- the kits are beautiful by themselves, but I'd like to see what everyone comes up with from the different pieces.
Hope your move goes smoothly.

I agree with Kay, I'd also like to keep the other thread going with examples of what people have done with the kits. I'm wondering if it would be better to do it the way the challenge boards do and have one for posting examples and another for comments. In some ways that is a pain but it really does make it easier not to missing things.

Just checking in before calling it a day & saw the note. IMHO, separate threads for posts & comments makes me crazy. ;) I think it's easier to just respond to the actual post (photo). Without the photo in the thread, I don't remember what someone is commenting on & have to open both threads & switch back & forth. Of course that's just my humble opinion & I'm the only one with short-term memory lapses.

I was wondering if it would be possible, maybe in a separate thread, for someone to re-list the instructions for doing these Scrapbook pages & Embellishments, and how to upload them.
The original thread is now 37 pages long and it got a little confusing to me when it came to uploading the pages. I would still like to try this, but it would take a long time to read all those pages, and then I'm not sure I'd get it right anyway.
I just thought, especially in that Nita is wanting to start a Part II, it would be nice to have the instructions for doing this on a thread all by itself.
If I'm the only one thinking this way, then it's alright if you don't want to do this. Just let me know.

I'd like the instructions as well Dorrie, if it isn't too much trouble to separate them out again.
Unfortunately I'm late jumping into this because of company most of the summer. I don't have a clue how to do a scrapbook page but I'd sure like to try.

I'll take a crack at it:
paper should be 12 x 12 inches at 300 dpi saved as a jpeg.
Embellishments should be saved as PNG files. There is no set size on them, just what you want their size to be in relation to your paper and other things on the page. Make sure you design on a new layer above the background and then delete the background so you have transparancy when you save it. You can combine more than one embellishment on a single page but not too crowded or they will be hard to "cut out" when someone uses them.
Zip your files in a compressed file before sending to Nita. The size of the zip file will depend on what your email account can handle. For example - AOL limits a file size to 15 mb so I keep my total size of the zip files at less than that. This means your kit may be divided up into 2 or 3 or even 4 zip files but that is okay as long as you identify them as yours: Nancy Marti Nautical Part 1, Nancy Marti Nautical Part 2 etc.
Once you have them ready, you send to the email address Nita gives you in a PM and she posts every Tuesday, although I believe it will be a couple of weeks before she posts again right now due to other commitments.
Think that's about it.

Dorrie,
Great idea!
Nancy,
Great directions!
The only thing you might add is to leave your files at original size for the zip. That may sound like a no brainer, but being new to this I thought they had to be resized for the web so when I sent them in and then tried to use them from Nita's site I realized they were too small.
Thankfully Nita is very kind and patient, so she replaced them for me. :)

:o I've been looking at this thread for awhile now but have not been brave enough to consider joining. Last night I thought what the heck and started playing around. Before I knew it I had 2 papers and some embellishments.. This is what I've come up with.. is it the kind of stuff that you are looking for? I'm not very good at this stuff but think this would be a great opportunity to learn. Everyone here seems so good at all this...
I'm not sure if I attached the picture of what I've come up with right... if not, how do I do it.
Please let me know what you think honestly... I'm always open to suggestions.

Welcome Laura - your kit is coming along nicely.
Too post a picture simple click on the icon at the top of your reply screen that is square with a little mountian and sun in it. That will bring up a box for you to paste the url of your photo into. Just remember not to try and post fullsize photos here or you will overwhelm the page. A photo 500x500 is about the max and at that size will pretty much fill the screen.

I used one from Adobe exchange - can't remember the name but it was in a mish-mash of stuff in one package. There was also an arched trellis and an anchor and other odd stuff to group together. I used the brush on a new layer then did a stroke outline to make it show up better. It worked quite well to make the fence. The buttons, ribbon, papers and tags are all my own. The foliage is also from a brush I downloaded. I scanned the two trims and flowers from some scraps I had.

Hi Everyone - I do make digital scrapbook pages but I've never really used a kit per se - I have used papers and embellishments I've found from various places along with tags and strips that match the background occasionally. I always have put the pieces together myself. Does a kit just include some backgrounds that you can mix and match and some embellishments - or am I supposed to put them together in a sample image? or both??
I have made some embellishments and some backgrounds myself but I don't know how to show them without showing the actual page I made with the photos? I think I am being dense again. The 2 kits I see here look like scenes. If I make a scene then how can people use the parts for their own pages. When I have downloaded the few kits I have, They aren't set up into scenes. They are zipped together with 5 - 8 files of fun stuff. Is that how we are doing this?:o
I suspect this will become more clear when I actually send in some pages and get to see how others have done theirs.
Thanks for your never ending patience with me!! Andie

The trick to a good kit is to have a color scheme and possibly a theme in mind. Then you create a few (minimum 3) background paapers and some embellishments to go along with them.
To show them just place them all on the same page, save as a jpeg and then upload them.
For example:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/Wags374/PetuniaKit.jpg
It shows all the background papers, and embellishments that are in the kit. It is simply a jpeg composite. But when the kit is zipped off for the exchange they are not sent grouped together. Does that make sense?
Wendy
August 30th, 2006, 04:24 AM
Yes thats what I do too ..... I make all the bits and then do a small preview jpg with them laid out nicely on it. That way people can see how they all go together :)

I've finally finished my first scrap kit ever  but I'm confused as to how to send it in.
Do I PM Nita, who will then reply with her email address?
Does the zipped file subsequently get emailed to her and she posts them?
Direction would be much appreciated, thank you!

While I'm thinking about it...
I made each embellishment separately and saved it as a .png file. Then I dragged each one to a larger transparent sheet, thinking each embellishment (layer) could then be dragged on to whatever image a person was working on.
However, once I saved this sheet of embellishments all the layers were flattened. (I tried .jpg and .png) My understanding is that we don't send any .psd files.
It was suggested in this thread that we could combine all the embellishments on to one sheet, which I thought was a great idea. So how would anyone use them? Is there another way to save this sheet to preserve the layers and make each embellishment "draggable" ? (I just invented a new word or spelled it wrong - I'm too tired to consult a dictionary!:D
Hope this makes sense.
p.s. I'm sending the embellishments as individual files. Is this how most of you did it?
karen donnybrook
September 3rd, 2006, 04:46 AM
Pat,
With the embellishments - as long as they do not overlap, each individual piece can be "cut" out and "pasted" into a new page. Does that make sense?
Yes you PM Nita and she will send you the email address. As soon as you have submitted one kit, you will be sent the web address and password.

Karen,
Thanks for responding.... I've sent off an email to Nita.
I'm totally stumped - how do you "cut" something out of a page? You don't mean with the selection tools do you?
I hope it's a decent time where you are; totally addicted to this scrapbooking thing, as if camera and PE aren't enough!
Thanks again, Pat

September 3rd, 2006, 05:17 AM
Pat,
It is 5.15pm Sundary afternoon (Father's Day in Australia). To cut an embellishment out of a page, I would use the ordinary lasoo tool and run the marching ants around it loosely (;)) and then either copy and paste into your new document or Ctrl+J to duplicate the selection and then copy and paste. As long as their is enough room around each individual embellishment, there should be not problems.

Fathers Day huh - ours was in June. It's 5:00 A.M. here now - good grief am I going to be tired tomorrow. Good thing it's Sunday!
Thanks for clearing that up Karen - perhaps if I had thought about it MUCH earlier this evening I would have clued in on my own.

Your kits are very nice! :D
You don't need to make them smaller for email (I made that mistake) leave them at original size and put them into a zip file. It may take more than 1 zip however.
Nancy has a post on the first page of this thread on how to send them in.
Nita will give you instructions too when she send her email address.

I moved & lived through it! (I think  ). My mother & I will be sharing a home but she brought everything from her 83+ yrs. There are wall-to-wall boxes & I may never see the light of day.
I e-mailed Wendy on dial-up (ARGGGG I could never go back to dial-up) to ask her to inform everyone that I may not get DSL up until later in the week. However, I did set it up a few minutes ago & will be uploading scrapbook kits this evening.
I have not had a chance to read any of the posts yet, but notice there were several kits previewed in this thread. However, only kits from two (Andie & Laura) only have been e-mailed to me. I haven't had a chance to open them yet. If any of you have kits ready, please e-mail them to me no later than midnight tonight & I'll finish upload them Wednesday.
Lots to do, so I must get busy. Wish you were all here to unpack boxes. ;)

The first 2 Scrapbook Exchange Galleries are quite large with around 200 items in each of the first 2. I am starting a 3rd gallery for September. Look for it beginning tomorrow (Wednesday, 6 September 2006). You will use the same password.
I recommend that members of the scrapbook exchange begin downloading kits in the previous 2 galleries so we can delete them beginning October 1st to make room for more.
Remember to include your user ID & name in EVERY individual file in the zip files you send. This will insure that you receive credit for all your kit pieces.
You might want to consider including a copy of the Kit Preview file (like the one you post in this thread), to be uploaded with your kit.

http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/uploads/thumb/11988.jpg (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=11975)
Most of you experienced scrappers know this but for any beginners like me, here are the embossing instructions.
Copy the border to it's own layer.
Use the magic was with contiguous unchecked to select all the elements of the border.
Click on the layer you want to emboss and use ctrl+J or duplicate via copy. You won't see a difference until the next step.
Select layer styles->bevels->emboss.

Thanks Nita. Once a month is about all I have time for now so I get other things done. It may be better for me to make kits from the pages I do instead of kits for the fun of it but at least I tried to used one of my for the fun of it kits. I really loved the affect I got playing around with a square brush from the Adobe exchange, loved the paper so I had to build a kit around it. Of course Linda's tutorial this week was on charms so I had to try my hand at those two. Here is my attempt at using one of my own kits.

I saved the papers as jpegs and divided them among several zip files. The embellishments I put on a 12 by 12 separated I mean so they are not touching leaving space between them and then saved that as a png file and put it in a zip file. I called by mail server and they said I would be okay sending a 8mb size I did send one over 10mb and it went through just fine.
When you make your zip folder and add a paper to it ; you will be able to see how big the zipped folder is getting by running your mouse over it. Hope this helps

(1) Vesta - Fall Kit (there are 2 more pages to this kit that will be uploaded late afternoon. My DSL was down for awhile & it put me behind)
(2) KRoberts - Fall Kit
(3) Karen Donneybrook = Oz Bush Kit
(4) KRoberts = Sunflower Kit
(5) AngelicKim = Flame Kit
Thanks to everyone who submitted a kit this week.
NOTE: This will be the last of the weekly kit uploads.
I have polled the members who have previously submitted kits & the majority would like to go with monthly submissions & an easier way to transfer kits. That leaves us time for our other design efforts.
I will be posting further information this weekend.
We need to set a date range for monthly submissions - maybe everyone have them to me by the 25th of every month & I'll upload them & send the download link & password to you on the 1st of the month. That gives me a few days to upload the kits & send everyone the link & password for the month.

AngelicKim I don't see the main background flame paper that you show in your sample kit. I'm wondering if that was meant to be left out or a problem in transit. I've had enough of those.
Vesta, great job on those embellishments, love the scarecrow wreath.
Kim, the Kaledidoscope Paper is wonderful. I'd love to know how you did that. Care to give lessons?

Lynn, as you can tell from my previous post I was having trouble sending the zip files to Nita. At one point I realized I had files in it I didn't want in it and I ended up moving a couple of files I shouldn't have. I will send a message to Nita and see it that page can still added. This is my first try and only did it because someone asked me to because they liked that exact flame page on the background of Montage. It was fun and frustrating to create it though. I got a lot of helpful tips from everyone and I want to thank them all.

Lynn,
I used the Mehdi Kaleidoscope plug-in from http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/kaleidoscope.htm I don't know the settings for the sliders, it was just something I was playing with. Here are some examples of how it works, with the settings listed:

Being a teacher I'm used to lessons, but in this case it was experimenting that got the final effect! After trying it again tonight, I think I'll experiment some more with a different photo and see what happens...
I guess this is a mini-tut!! Hope it is helpful:D

Thanks Nita for the latest kits! I'm behind in downloading, so I'll have to get moving! I wasn't aware of the plan for the monthly uploads, but it sounds like a good idea and hopefully it'll be easier on you.

Kroberts, Thanks for the information. I downloaded it but there are no install instructions and I'm not sure where to put it. Can you help me out. They have a lot of cool ones there. I recognize others from Nita's pages.

Careful Kim... the kaleidoscope filter is as addictive as Wendy's orb effect! In fact, after using the kaleidoscope dozens of times one evening, I decided to try the orb effect & it was wonderful. The kaleidoscope sliders are something you have to just play with - the settings for one image don't look the same on another image... you just have to play with it until you see one that makes you say, "oooh, ahhhh".

I shouldn't ask this because I can see me playing with this one for hours but what is the orb? I did figure out how to bring up the filters once I down loaded them. Now I'll have to clean up my extra copies.

Lynn, you should download Wendy's orb action. It will save you alot of time making an orb. They are fun to do from scratch too.

Thanks for the info, I think. I've spent way to much time playing with this. Maybe, I shouldn't have asked, LOL. You could get some interesting patterns by copying only a section of the photo to a new layer and using the filter on that. Here was my first attempt (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=12298). I made another copy of the whole photo and blurred it for the background.
I took this one step further and made a fill patterns with it. Add a drop shadow and bevels and it looks like tiles floating above the surface. This one (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/uploads/12312.jpg) may be fun to do a kit around.
I also had a lot of fun playing around with blend modes blending different attempts.

Lynn,
The "tiles" are great and yes, I agree, it would be great in a kit.
