I have Photoshop Elements 3.0 for Windows and my operating system is Windows 2000.

When I try to open a raw file (Nikon NEF) I get this error message, "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".

Does anybody have an idea of what I need to do to fix this? Thanks.

Hi Artoris,

I have a Canon camera & Elements 3. If I remember correctly I had to install a download from the Canon site that allows me to process my RAW images.

Perhaps the Nikon site has a similar download.

Edit: I just looked back in my files and Adobe (Elements) has RAW updates as well that include Nikon so perhaps this is all you need. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Windows

Hope this helps but I'm sure someone with a Nikon will be along soon and have specifics for you.

Hi, I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. Here is what I was told to do.

When you open them in PSE, they will initially open in Adobe Camera RAW. Most of the settings can be set to "automatic" and often generate good results. You'll easily be able to remove the blue cast by playing with the white balance settings. Once you've tweked your image, you click "open" and they will open in Editor. from there you can save them in any format you choose, including JPEG.

Hope it helps.

You did you download and install the Adobe Camera Raw update?

Juergen, I thought PSE 3 came with a raw converter. It's necessary to download it?

I have PSE 3 use a Canon and I never downloaded it. I opened some photos I took and some of them were raw but they showed in organizer and the instructions I posted earlier were suggested by Tony and it worked for me just fine.

Adobe Camera Raw is an update to open RAW files in Elements Editor. I downloaded and installed it according to the instructions. I don't know how Kim is working without having installed it. Unless Organizer does something I am not aware of.

OK, PSE3 does come with ACR, but an older version, which does not support all cameras out there today. So, you'll have to get and install the update. The newest is 3.4, listed under PSE4, applies to PSE3 also.
Here is what it says at the Adobe site:

Camera Raw 3.4 update
This new version of the Camera Raw plug-in replaces the original Camera Raw plug-in that was installed with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 and 4.0 software. Visit the Camera Raw page for a complete list of supported cameras.

Sorry, Kim, I did not mean to doubt your words... I had never even tried to run RAW images before I got the update. :)

Juergen, I did recently install an update to my Canon Raw software. I get alot of automatic updates for some programs, maybe it updated it and I didn't realize it. Stupidily I don't always check what the updates are that are being installed. Most of the time I do.

I just checked my updates folder and there is an Adobe update there but it doesn't say what it is specifically.
