http://www.daz3d.com/program/bryce/bryce5free.php?
DAZ is offering a free version of their landscaping & modelling application, a former Corel app, named Bryce. Bryce 5 is available for both Mac and win, though the news will tell you it's not 10.4 compatible, comments over the web said the contrary. A 20$ will get you the most recent version (5.5).
For Mac specifically: download.com has a bug and might send you the file with a TXT extension. Simply remove the TXT, keeping the .sitx extension and you'll be able to decompress and install it.
Have fun!

I shall say it's not an easy one to play with, but you can do very nice things with it.
Here are a few of the images I did when I took a class :

hey Ray that looks like some of the stuff my son does on one of his x-box games! Don't know which one or anything about it but he built a house.........a very strange one at that. He was showing me all the parts he could add.

Just found a little problem with the Mac version. If I try and do anything which opens a file dialogue, it appears beneath the main window and I can't do anything with it. Cmd+Tab will show it but if you click it, it returns to the main window again. This is under Tiger 10.4.7.

So did I :D . Turns out you need to move the mouse right to the top of the screen and magically another menu appears (or Ctrl-Q quits). Still haven't created anything but at least I found the manual:

David,
I have Bryce 5.5. for Mac, so maybe the update is required. Do you have a Mac OS 9 capable computer? If so, maybe running it in Classic mode would help you get to know Bryce and decide if you want to upgrade.

I'm sure this will help a lot. I noticed also on their site that there are tutorials, I haven't really looked at them to see how good they are but just a heads up that they are there.

Ray,
No, I never bothered installing OS 9. I suppose it'd be useful at times like this but it's a huge performance to do it now.

That's the class I took. Only with an instructor. Robin also offers level II. You might as well begin there and see if you need an instructor or not. And save the money for some goodies ;)

Finally managed to get a green glass ball onto a beach, rendered and imported the image into Elements where, of course I had a handy orb to overlay. If I ever get it figured out I can see that this could be neat application to use in conjunction with Elements.

Anna and Tony;
Thanks for the link to the tut.. This is one weird program. Am I wrong when
I look at it and think of Art work more than photo work..
Freehand drawing has never been my strong suit, but I will give it a try...
Tom.......
TonyW
August 24th, 2006, 04:18 PM
Tom: It's certainly one wierd program but I haven't tried 3D modelling programs before so I was expecting something different and it sure is but is quite fun to play with. It's certainly not art work in the sense of Painter and I haven't yet got to anything that required freehand drawing - and that wouldn't suit me one bit either. But the manipulation of objects in 3D space which is what it's all about does appeal to my sense of something - not sure what something :D . It's more photorealism than photo although if I ever get it figured out I can see it could be used for achieving some of the effects I've thought of doing (for Challenges for example) but couldn't figure out how to do it.

I'm really mad at you now... I'm going to have to upgrade my comp to so rendering doesn't take forever :D:D.
Carbone
August 24th, 2006, 06:18 PM
Rendering takes a long time, Gary, even with a dual processor (mine). Bryce comes with a utility called Bryce Lighting which permits rendering to be spread over many computers. Especially helpful if you build movie scenes.
