I am trying to move my photos offline ..... on to dvd's. I have tried to do this easily 5 times today. 4 x's I got to 38% of the first DVD burned and every stopped. When I finally cancelled the burn and hit ctrl-alt-delete it said the organizer was not responding. One time I got as far as verifying the first disk and it told me it couldn't do it for some reason. I tried it again and got to 38% again and then nothing. So I have lost about 5 DVD's to this today.

I am not sure how many photos I have that I am trying to move, but it does tell me that I need 4 DVD's to accomplish the move. I really need to move these off and free up some hard disk space......

HELP!!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS????????

Just some quick questions to see if we can figure out why that project is resisting getting done. Am I assuming correctly that you are NOT using the Organizer backup system?

I am assuming that you are opening your burn software, adding your photos to the burn list, and burning to DVD. Are you confident about the quality of those DVD discs? I have gotten that cannot verify message after the burn from time to time for what I think is no apparent reason. The message tells me to use another disc and that the present one could be defective. I use another disc from the same batch and then it is OK. It is possible you may have some bad discs?

Where are these photos on the hard drive that you are burning to DVD? What are they JPEGS? What burn software? After the failure messages, do you check the disc to see if anything was burned to it?

Now back to the original assumption...if you are using the Organizer backup, then check Search Forums. I am almost certain that I have seen Threads dealing with frequent problems with Organizer Backup.

I was trying to use the Organizer burn, because I wanted to be able to be prompted when I clicked on a thumbnail to insert the disk to which it was burned. Is that a bad idea? I have previously burned through my record now or nero, so I have COPIES on other disks.

I am as confident as I can be about the quality of the disks. They are TDK's and have never had a problem with TDK's before.

The photos are all in folders in MY DOCUMENTS. I have always had them there and I was able to move some off line from there back in the late winter. Oh, and the photos are both .jpg's and .psd's

I have not checked the disks, will try to do that.......

will also search the forum.

Do you think I am better off burning these files to DVD's CD's or my External HD??????

Thanks for your help and prompt response! Much Appreciated!!!

In searching the forums, it looks like many people have had issues with burning from the organizer. I just thought that moving them from there would be the easiest and best way to get them off the computer. Looks like that may not be the case. I can use my Nero or Record Now and then just delete the files off my computer I guess, but that will leave my organizer with a ton of disconnected files. That may have to be what I do, because otherwise I cannot load all my vacation pics onto the compter......it is running way to slowly these day.......

I guess I am just talking to myself right now.......I need to make a decision on how to move these off.......just hate the thought of all the disconnected files......

If I recall correctly, that Organizer Backup has its problems. Tomorrow I will search around the Forums to see if I can find those posts that I think I saw.

Scott Kelby did a feature on Photoshop Workflow on Photoshop TV, Episode 42, August 7, 2006 (http://www.photoshoptv.com). The message that came across was you cannot backup too much. In this case, he did it at least 3 ways:

(1) Epson P2000 or P-4000 (hand held size hard drive with large LCD). That was a beauty. But, when I looked it up, Oh, the price!!
(2) Lexar Media Card Reader
(3) computer (as CD/DVD)

If you get a chance, go to the Photoshop TV web site given above and take a look at his presentation (best via iTunes).

If I find additional info on the Organizer Backup and how to get that to work and/or why it does not, I will let you know.

Thanks ATR, it seems like you come to my rescue a lot! I appreciate it.

Photoshop TV website??????? best via itunes????? I will see if I can find it.

I do try to back up every couple of weeks....and I do that to my external HD, it seems to just be the moving process that is driving me nuts..... I do that both through the Maxtor itself and then I have done that through the organizer.......

I would appreciate any info you find! Thanks again ATR, your the best!

Colleen,
I'm also trying to do this because I'm running out of hard disk space--But I'm copying my files first through Windows or drag to disk--to make sure I have copies of all the photos. Second I'm removing them via the organizer so I don't have the broken/reconnection issue with the proxy thumbnails. It just takes lots of time. But I've had the same issues where it says the disk is no good--or can't verify--very frustrating!!!!

You're right, it is VERY frustrating! I finally got some moved over.....not through the organizer, and then I just deleted the files from my hard drive....I know when I look at the organizer I will have lots of disconnected files....oh, well! I really did give it the ole college try though! But....I did make a .....basically a table of contents for what is on each disk....hopefully, that will help!

I'm sorry you two are having such problems with the Burn/Move commands.

I think you know I am an Organizer liker. I thought of a workaround, but as I was typing it here, I realized how ugly and time consuming it would be (so long I timed out on the response earlier).

I've been talking with Colleen off-line on this issue. The best I can offer, while gladly spending your money for you, is External Hard Drives, instead of CDs/DVDs. Much easier to work with these without worrying about proxy files, verifying burns and such. Of course, I realize this may not be in your photo budgets at this time.

Worst case would be to back up the pictures without worrying about Organizser, just to be sure they are not lost. Tags and stuff can always be recreated if needed, but I realize this means you lose your visual link to these pictures.

Ward,
I too like the organizer but I have over 30,000 photos tagged--I want to keep those proxys/tags there!!! I have a second internal hard drive --it is full. So I must move some off my computer. I don't trust the organizer fully so that is why I back up to a dvd--then do the other back up & removal through the Organizer. But it's not always as smooth as they make it seem.......

Colleen,
I had something similar happen Saturday while doing a 4 DVD burn of our vacation pics. It was time to free up space also. I was using Nero and the system froze. Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work, the cursor wasn't working, nada. Had to use the switch on the back of the computer to shut down. The disk was 93% burned. I think it was a bad disk. Finished the burn with no problems after that. I was burning pics in RAW (.NEF)+ jpg and dng formats.
