Layers Courses-- any rhyme or reason?

It seems as if it's memorization of the specifics. Mask with black, draw with white use color setting.. They're's no actual system. Can we paint with black, etc. what about swapping. I can't make myself a key. Is there any basic chart or schematic to help me figure out this complicated system?

I'm sorry but I really don't understand what you mean ...

When you use a mask then painting on it in black hides the image and painting on it in white reveals it.

Apart from that you can paint and draw on your image itself in any colour you like :)
