Can some one tell me if I put one of these in my computer if it'll make DVDs bootable. I have a version of Linux I got at a good price and want to install it. Thanks.

I am not sure if you want to create your own bootable disk or want to boot from one...

To create it : You need either a bootable ISO of the OS you want to burn and the according software to burn the ISO on the DVD, or a dedicated software to create a bootable CD or DVD.

To boot from it : In your computer BIOS, set the boot order to first scan for the DVD / CD drive. Next insert the disk, and reboot.

If you want to have Linux and Windows, you'll have to install a boot manager. LILO will do the job and is usually included in Linux. If you have a large drive (i.e. 10GB and more), you'll probably have to set LILO's option to use LBA (if you have Red Hat 9, for example).

Hope this helps !
