Erasing within stroked figures

I don't know if this an advanced question or not but here goes:
I want to outline a picture with the stroke feature and then erase the figure leaving the outline. I know that it can be done taking a lot of time to meticulously take out pixel by pixel at the edges. Is there a quicker way?

Ctrl +click your layer thumbnail and it will select your image... then make a new layer. Go to Edit>stroke and make your stroke settings. The turn off or delete your original image layer.
