In the attached picture the left side of my granddaughters head is lost because of the Sun light. I have tried the various Over Exposure techniques shown in several of the tutorials but none of them work. Is it possible that the picture is just too overexposed and that none of the left side actually got taken? Is there any technique that would allow me to recover that part of the photo? The picture I attached is a low quality picture in order to get it smaller enough to be to attach. I have a better quality picture but the left side is under exposed as shown in the attachment.

Barry,

This probably looks nothing like her... and I apologize up front!

I selected some of the visible portion of her head, placed it on a new layer, flipped the layer horizontally, and then twiddled with it a bit.

It's just an idea... unfortunately, there is nothing salvageable in the blown-out portion of the image.

Byron,
We must be on the same wave length today. I did exactly what you did!

Barry,
With a little effort you can create a pretty nice image, following Byron's suggestions. I would give it a try.

Thanks for the idea. I did not even realize those options were available. I was able to do the selection. I was able to do the flip. However, when I tried to do a free rotate and move the selection over to the other side of her head ( the over exposed side ), I was sort of in a locked mode where I could not execute any commands. Could you provide the exact steps you performed after the Selection was made. Thanks!!!

Barry,
Do not Free Rotate. Stay with the Move Tool. If you take the cursor just outside of one of the corners, you'll see a little curved arrow. There you can rotate it. Also, if the size does not quite look right, pull on one of the corner boxes while holding the shift key. Or pull on one of the middle boxes to elongate the whole selection.

Barry,

In addition to using the Move tool as Juergen describes, I also used Free Transform (Image > Transform > Free Transform). Doing that, if you hold CTRL, you can distort the selection by dragging the handles. I did a bit of that to try to approximate the different perspective you would see with the side of the face being away from the viewer.

I also erased a bit of her little ear that I copied - again to simulate a difference in perspective.

Have fun!!

Good job Byron

I tried to even and darken a little without cloning and flipping. If you use your info tool there is a little color in the side of her face. The version you posted is low res but with a high res version you should be able to darken quite a bit without too much color noise. Maybe even try Shadows/ Highlights along with a strong levels or layer mode changes.

Then some noise reduction and or selective blurring.
