Good grief! With all these Canon folks around I just had to put in a word for Nikon. I have a D70s and really like it. I have taken a couple of courses and shot hundreds of pix and all the practice is beginning to pay off. Great focus. I have the kit lens that came with the camera and have added a wide angle, macro and telephoto lens. Of course there is always another lens out there to wish for!

Glad to see we're finally getting off the Canon/Nikon promos :D . Fuji 9000 here and it's the best I've had yet. Plus a Sony P72 that slips in the pocket and not to mention a very old 2MP Olympus that originally cost more than the other two put together. Still waiting for someone to make a DSLR that has everything I want in a digital camera and then I might make the next move :)

i'm like the old Maytag repairman - the loneliest guy online due to the fact I don't have either canon or nikon - just a Konica-Minolta 5D and an old Fuji 602Z. The KM was only out for a short time and the company sold out and the fuji has long been discontinued. Both still work and do what I ask - so am happy.

Nikon D70s here... It was a difficult choice between the D50 and D70s, the kit lens was a major deciding factor.
The Canon Rebel was seriously considered, but I already own several Nikon lens and speedlights which can still be used with the D70s.

Oh why not jump in, I am a Nikon man. I suspect it has more to do with the era I grew up in, photographically that is, From the 50s through to the beginning of the 80s Nikon was the camera of choice by journalist. around the 70s Canon started introducing Nikon like knock off ad they made a niche for themselves within the sports community which they parlayed into a camera force to reckoned with. But for me the taste for Nikon was set. Presently I shoot film with an F5 and digital with a D70. I also have a Canon A610 that sits in my pocket and a Mamiya C330 Professional that sits in the bottom of my camera bag.

I am looking at buying a new digital SLR right now. Had it narrowed down to the Nikon D50 or the Canon Rebel XT. Last week Nikon threw a monkey wrench in the whole process when they introduced the new Nikon D80. The review I read put this camera between the D50 and the D70. So more research to be done.:(

My first Canon was the A1 (see My Cameras on my web site) and it was an incredibly good camera and certainly not a knockoff of Nikon. Having said that I am very impressed with the new D200 although it is considerably heavier than my 20D. I have finally convinced my friend who is also completely sold on Nikon (he got ticked off when Canon changed lens mounts) to begin using the combo RAW and JPEG setting in his new one and he is now getting much better prints on his R1800.
BTW I love the Manfrottos you recommended and have been using them extensively. I particluarly like how you can swap the vertical column to horizontal and pan both up and down and side to side even though the 488RCO is a ball head Thanks for the rec. Now I'm looking for an inexpensive hot shoe bubble level.

My first Canon was the A1 (see My Cameras on my web site) and it was an incredibly good camera and certainly not a knockoff of Nikon.
I didn't mean to imply inferior but the first professional one (1971 I believe) was the Canon F1 and so very close to the Nikon F series as to be scarry. It was a little cheaper in cost but almost as good in quality. Later Canon developed their own line. Nikon did the same thing emulating Leica way back when.

I have a Nikon D70. The most important part isn't the camera (though Nikon rules ;)) but the glass or lenses. I already have a Nikkor 70-300mm Telephoto and a Nikkor 60mm Macro. I just bought (thanks to the $100 rebate last month) the Nikkor AF-S DX Zoom 17-55mm f.2.8G IF ID. It cost more than the camera, but this lens is awesome with a 77mm opening and the Silent Wave motor. I want to get their new 18-200mm AF-S DX VR lens sometime in the future too. :D

I've been using a Nikon Coolpix 8400 for about a year. I needed a camera that could do wide angle without having to change lenses. As a real estate agent, that's a must if I want pictures of the rooms and not just the objects in the rooms. The CP 8400 also has panorama assist so that I can stitch photos together for virtual tours. I'm very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to other agents ... if it hadn't been discontinued.

I have a Canon Rebel XT. Also have a little Olympus D-550 zoom, which I still just LOVE.
I was actually going back and forth between buying the Canon Rebel XT and the Nikon D50. I went with the Canon because it seemed so many people had the Canon that if I had any questions, the answer would be only minutes away......BTW....question: Is there a way to just turn off the flash? I know there is an auto mode that you can uses that doesn't fire the flash, but can I somewhere change a setting to not use the flash in other modes??????
Oh, my daughter (15) has a Nikon cool-pic which she just loves, and it takes wonderful pictures.....

I realize my bold, loud "Buy it" might not really help much. Sorry. I can say that one of the huge advantages of the D50 is its ability to take photos at as high as 1600 ISO with lowish noise. I will give you a recent example from my D50.
The other night, I had low light so I had to bump up the ISO to 1600 to get this shot of my daughter eating cotton candy at a baseball game:

Kodak Z740. I love it. It's enough for me. Kind of in between a digital SLR and a point and shoot.
Same here. I love it. although half way between point and shoot and SLR doesnt really describe it. Its more of an SLR in an ergonomic, compact form. At 5 megapixels, it takes great photos, yet at this point in time, I cant tell the diference between photos taken on my camera or photos taken on my cousins Rebel XT (besides the photos themselfes, shes a headshot photographer in NYC) on my laptop screen anyway.
I hope to be upgrading to the sonr dsc-r1 or the samsung digimax pro850 when I can afford it.

Well here are so many cameras out there. The come in a variety of shape, sizes and complexities and the reason being is that that so do people. I use a variety of cameras and they work for me. For most people I believe that the best camera is the one that you are going to use. Sounds a little strange but if you buy a brand XCamera and it is uncomfortable in you hands or around you neck it will mostly remain in the closet. Good cameras don't take picture on there own but are tools in the hands a craftsman. A carpenter buys a well balanced hammer, not a brand, so he can drive nails all day. The hammer is nothing without the carpenter. A good camera is the same it is a tool to make you job easier. Make no mistake it is the photographer that makes the pictures not the camera. The camera makes the job easy. IN the end if you buy a Nikon all this means is "I own a Nikon" .
Now all that said "I own a Nikon" I do hope my photographs say "Grant is a photographer!"

I just went shopping for an elderly friend who wanted a user-friendly, high quality digitial camera for grandkid snapshots and such. I steered her toward the Kodak Z750 (I think that is the configuration). I noticed how many on this forum use the Kodak and get great results! I also recommended it to my sister-in-law, who loves it too!
Sometimes, I think point and shoot cameras take better photos "right out of the camera" than some higher end cameras. Cannot say that about my Nikon D50 though. The D50 takes 'em out of the camera better than any point and shoot camera I have seen or used. Especially once you put a prime lens on the D50. Forgeddaboutit!

Too true Grant but we tend to forget that it is the operator and not the camera that takes really good photos. A good photographer would be able to get good photos using any camera but using a good camera he will get brilliant photos.

So more research to be done.:(
No, the D80 is a D200 put into a D70 body, for the price of what a D70 used to cost not too long ago. It doesn't have every feature of a D200 but it looks to have most of them. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80.htm
I use a D50. At this point, I'm the limiting feature, not the camera. Next would be the lenses perhaps.
