Right-click on any image file and click on >Open with... Next click on >Choose Program... and highlight Windows Fax and Picture Viewer. Check >Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

OK, you can associate the Jpegs with PSE. Then you should still be able to right-click on the file and get the >Preview option, which should open the Windows Fax and Picture viewer. Or is that not happening? At least you should be able to go >Open with... and then get the Win viewer option.

Can you go the other way around? Do what I first suggested and then set up PSE to open by clicking >Open with...

Associating jpegs with pic/fax viewer by using 'open with' and 'always use' and then go into file types and set jpegs to PSE? That won't work, I've tried it.

No, you do the first part, but then, without doing anything else, you should have PSE as one of the options in the >Open with... dialog. If it is not an option, you go again to >Choose Program... and do not check Always use.. The next time PSE should show up in Open with... automatically.

That kind of gets me back to post #4. Sorry, I think I'll have to pass...:(

I'm been following this thread, but I am a little confused.
Would you clarify one thing, please.
Are you saying "While using Elements" I can preview the image in the XP viewer or are you preview the image outside of Elements and then opening it?
I still have PSE2 and will take a look, if I can replicate your steps in looking at a picture

I think we are all trying to get to the same point, but driving different routes.
Here is how I have my system set up.
My JPGs are associated with Microsoft Office Picture (MOP). (You could change this to Win Fax and Viewer).
With PSE closed, I can click to open them or Right Click>Preview to open.
With PSE open, I can do a File>Open to point to the file and then Right Click>Preview and it opens in MOP. Or I can just use File>Open>click picture while in Elements and it opens Elements. Same for V2 and V3.

This sounds to me like this is what you want or do I misunderstand you?
If you do a Right Click>Properties>Open With now on a JPG, what is the program that is associated with your JPGs. I think in Post #9 you said it was PSE.
This is common with installs.

Hi Cavan ...

So glad you found the fix ... :)

Quite a few of us have more than one version of Elements installed ... that way you can use the one you prefer and then switch to another if you need a feature that isn't available in the one you are using.

Have to admit that PSE2 is my favourite ... but I got used to the others eventually ...

Cavan ...

You shouldn't have strugged with those ... try this:

Look at the top of the toolbar and you will see a row of little dots. Click on them, hold down the mouse button then drag the toolbar down and over to the right ... it will then go into two columns. You will then be able to drag it, in a straight line, back over to the left and it will stay in that format. To change it back you just drag it up and it will go back into a single column ...

Remove photo bin (Window>Photo Bin) and it starts to look a lot more like PSE2

.. and there you go :)

(I'm using a Mac so it will look slightly different to the Windows Version)

One more thing I discovered in this context: Clicking on the little icon in the lower right hand corner (next to "Palette Bin") will close (or open) the palette bin. I had never noticed that...

Ah ...

Sounds like its a Windows thing ... if you click on my image a couple of messages ago (to get the larger sizes version on screen). I think on the Mac that info you are talking about is at the bottom of the image itself ...

Hi Cavan ...

Mine must be different as it is identical in both PSE4 and PSE2 .. your sounds as though the two versions are different :)

Hi ...

If you take a look at my images (I used the same photo in each screenshot) you can see that the Mac version had it in PSE2 as well. I'm using a 20 inch cinema screen and its less than a quarter of an inch ... I just noticed that you said your was 2.5 inches

Just curious but where did the info appear in PSE2 on the Windows version ??

Hi Cavan ...

On the Mac version the staus bar is a small grey band at the bottom of each image you have open ... you have to look carefully to see it as it is very small :) :)

Glad you were able to get the preview back to where you wanted.
I'll agree with your caution on changing registry keys-even when I thought I knew what I was doing, I've made some unwanted changes.

Cavan,
I'm glad that your problem is solved. :) Just out of curiosity I looked at my registry and found one of the keys you mentioned,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PhotoshopElements.JPEGFile\shell \preview\command with this data entry:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2\PhotoshopElements.exe" "%1"
The edit and open command data entries are the same.

Now, when I click on Open, the file will be opened with IrfanView (that is what I set up), clicking on Edit opens the file with MS Paint, of all things(!), and when I click on Preview it opens in Windows Picture and Fax viewer. In order to open a file with PSE2 or 3, I have to go to Open with...
All that does not seem to follow those registry keys at all. FWIW.

Cavan,
No, I don't really want to change anything...

Having only PSE2 and 3, it took me a while to figure out what status bar you were talking about. I finally found a screenshot of the PSE4 work area. And it looks definitely different from what Wendy's looked like on the Mac. I did some checking around, but so far have not found any way to disable that thing. I'm sure you have looked in the preferences settings?
Someone here can hopefully come up with an answer.

I said I was not going to be nosey, but this has gotten the best of my curiosity-what is the benefit of having the image in both PSE and Win Viewer at the same time? (See Post #30 of this thread). I would think you could preview in either application. I've just never seen anyone who used two views at the same time.

Makes great sense and thanks for not being offended by my question.
