A tale of woe to remind people how important backing up your work is.

I have not posted for a while in part because I have been doing some catch up mundane improvements of scans from negatives taken a couple of decades ago...Sentimental value rather tha photographic value.

Was doing that for a month then dissater struck. My new computer failed big time dead as a door nail. Although my hard drive had not failed I was put into a situation where I needed to opt for a hard drive reformat and lose all my data.. So even if your hard drive does not fail there are circumstances that may arise due to your manufacturers engineers requests before they continue with a complicated repair diagnosis..

Fortunately for me I had backed up the important stuff a couple of hours before the machine clapped out.

So as others have posted on at other times. Back up after every important usage as disaster can strike at any time......

I was without my new machine for a month. I am still struggling to get my e-mail settings in full working order....When will I find time to play with elements....At this rate not before Xmas.....2010 :D

PS for those interested in what happened to the computer. The mother board failed. Onsite engineer came and fitted new board. However try as he could he could not get the sata HD to lock on to sata it kept reverting back to a setting called "Raid" in spite of selecting "save" in the bios.

He came back a second day and tried another new mother board with the same problem occuring. Windows simply would not boot...

He believed windows had become corrupted and used a maintenance program on the computer called PC angel which reinstalls the computer to factory settings but at the same time reformats the HD.

This program was run but failed to resolve the problem. So it was sent back to the workshop for repair with all my data lost.....All in all waiting for the on site engineer then waiting for the workshop repair i have been without it for a month.

My old computer unfortunately being win 98 cannot install elemnts....

Motto of the story back up back up back up.....

I want to share an idea I had a while ago that worked very well for me:

I had a processor problem and the phone technicians in India wanted me to reformat my hard drive because they were sure it was defective, even tho' I knew it was not a hard drive issue. I removed my hard drive and installed an old one, reformatted that one and had the same problems. I now have my "defective" hard drive in my new computer and didn't have to lose my hard drive info!!! I have decided to always keep an old hard drive around in case of other system failures. Maybe this technique will work for someone else. Andie

I lost a hard drive with 2 years of psd files on it. Now I follow the example of my Lord... remember friends, Jesus Saves!
