View Full Version : ISO and Light source are lost when converted from NEF to DNG

1. I used Adobe DNG converter (latest) to convert my Nikon D70s NEF image to DNG and now PSE 3.01 does not show my image ISO settings and says "light source" is unknown. I can see these things in Nikon View - they are included in NEF file.
Adobe claims that nothing is lost when converting to DNG from NEF.
2. Also while PSE 3.01 shows NEF images in collection, when I open it, it skips Camera RAW plugin and opens it right in the editor. This does not happen with DNG - these open in RAW editr first.
3. Also, too bad RAW editor can't crop the image - any clues?
4. When is PSE v5 coming out? Its about time...
Thanks for your help folks!

Romanik,
The DNG converter is a completely separate application from Elements... Perhaps you need to contact adobe - check out the forums on their website and see if anyone else has problems.
When you installed Nikon View it probably installed it's raw coverter, so when it sees an NEF file, it uses that, where as when you open a DNG file it uses the Adobe Raw Converter. If you look in the plug-ins directory you will probably find it there (Sorry, I forget the path - C://program files/adobe/Photoshop Elements 3.0/plugins or something like that).
You have to save the file as a JPEG/PSD/TIFF or some other format to get it into the regular editor to crop it. The RAW "Editor" is only for making adjustments to the picture.

Romanik;
I don't remember where I saw the statement that Nikon-view and
Adobe raw have some kind of conflict and both should not
be installed on the same machine.... Hope my memory is correct..
Maybe some other member will be able to supply more info.. Tom:confused:

It seems that Trish mix up two different things. The Adobe DNG converter
is probably not in the Adobe Elements folder except if you did put that converter in that folder. In other words it is a stand alone application that Im sure could be executed without any other Adobe app on that PC. Adobe Elements do not use the converter. Simple it is an EXE file, named "Adobe DNG Converter.exe".
I have put mine into the folder "C:\Programmer\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 4.0" and a shortcut on my Desktop. But as said, Im sure that you could put it anywhere even on a CD or USB stick that you could run on another PC without installing.
All what it does is that it make another RAW file from your RAW source (read only).
So, you would end up with two RAW files, one with extension NEF (or whatever Nikon is using for that camera) along with another file with extension DNG. The idea/point is to have an universal and future compatible RAW file named DNG. The other thing that came with the download is a 8bi file named "Camera Raw.8bi" and that file is a plugin for Adobe so it is able to read whatever RAW file (e.g. your source NEF file, or my Canon CR2 file, or DNG, or...)

I have installed RAW support into PSE 3.0.1 and it shows me Nikon NEF files in PSE (even without doing the conversion to DNG). Unfortunately PSE does not show light source and ISO of the image for NEF files from my Nikon D70s, while it does show light source and ISO for JPG files from my Sony DSC 717. I think this is PSE bug. Is anyone from Adobe reading this or shall I report it as a bug to support? It also does not show ISO and light source for DNG files.
Nikon view has nothing to do with it as its raw converter is not visible to PSE. PSE is using Adobe Raw plugin - and these two do not interfere.
Does anyone else have this trouble?
