Photography Workflow--Shadows/Highlights

I had no trouble with Day 12 except for the fact that I don't understand how the paintbrush erases and reveals the underlying layer.
I understand using masks in adjustment layers--how black hides and white reveals the adjustment layer effects. But, I don't understand how this worked in Day 12 of Workflow since there was no mask and the foreground color appeared to be black.

Hi ...

When you group an image with something (say a square on an otherwise blank layer) then the image will only show up within the square.

In this case he groups with a blank layer and then paints in the shape (like the square) later.

You could actually paint the shape in any colour and the effect will still work (Its the solid part of the layer and the transparency that work in this case)

Its a clever tip .. :)
