View Full Version : CS2 Brushes in Elements 4 and 3?

Was browsing through the PSE4 Missing Manual and there's a note (bottom of p424 for those who have the book) that seemed a bit odd to me and I wonder if someone with CS2 could confirm or deny. It says:

Elements 4 is based on Photoshop CS2, so CS2 downloads are compatible. Plug-ins designed for older versions of Photoshop or Elements usually work with newer versions, but not the other way round. So a brush made for Photoshop CS2 works in Elements 4 but not Elements 3.

I always thought that brushes were pretty universal. Is that last sentence correct or is it a typo - are there other things that when created in CS2 will work in PSE4 but not PSE3?

Thanks Tony

I've been blissfully downloading brushes with no thought to compatibility. :D

I do recall somebody saying there was a major brush engine overhaul from 5-6 or 6-7 (can't remember which version jump) I hadn't heard of any probs other than some of the brush options that aren't available in Elements not converting well, but that would be expected.:confused:

Hi Tony ...

Everytime Adobe update their brush engine then the brushes created by it are not backwards compatable ...

I'm pretty sure that brushes created in CS won't work in PS7 and those created in PSE7 won't work in PS6. (and those knock on into Elements)

However brushes made in CS2 do work in CS, PSE4 and PSE3 :) ... CS2 didn't seem to have major changes to the brush engine but I suspect that Barbara's book assumed that it would. :)

Thanks Wendy - that's useful info - I sort of thought that someone would have mentioned it on the forum by now if they weren't compatible.
