Layers greyed out.

Just when I thought I was getting somewhere I open a .gif image and can't add layers or copy the only layer in the gif. Everything under 'Layer' is greyed out. The layer is called 'Index' and is locked. What is different about this GIF which I had previously saved from a JPG?

This happens when the GIF is in Indexed color mode. Click Image > Mode and change to RGB, then all will work OK.

Thanks!! I had spent a couple of hours reading here hoping to figure it out on my own, without luck. Not sure how it got into Index mode.:(

GIFs are indexed colour by default. Elements will open them as such to begin with. You have to manually set them to RGB.
