View Full Version : Trying filters

I'd like to know if it's obvious that filters have been applied to this photo, or if I'm not being brave enough using the various adjustments when applying the filter.
Any suggestions?

Well - obvious yes because I can see a canvas texture - but there's nothing wrong with that. It's not being brave it's being creative :) . Back in the old days photographers would have really had to work hard to produce an effect like that.
And I love old farm pictures - I think that's an old windmill in the background covered in vines. There's one like it near us that I keep meaning to get a picture of.
Suggestions? I think I'd replace the sky with a nice blue one with wispy clouds but that's just my personal preference for blue skies.

Tony:
Thanks so much for the response. I'm not sure what it is, maybe I'm just trying too hard. I can't see the canvas effect in the image, but that's exactly what I've done. I'm glad you picked up on it.
And the sky........darn, I meant to try to improve on that but got so caught up in the rest of it that I forgot. Well, it will be interesting to see if I've saved my file correctly so I could perhaps go back and try to change the sky.........:o
Thanks for checking it out.:)

Hi Mary ...
Oh that looks good ... its a nice effect :)
You do tend to find that when you resize your images to upload then because they are smaller effects just don't show up as much ...

Nice photo - any thoughts to maybe trying to make it a black and white - or maybe even a sepia?

Thanks Vesta and Wendy. There's still hope for me then, huh?:o
Actually, I have considered both the black and white and the sepia tones for this type of picture. I've tried it once before and liked it, but this one I wanted to try some filters on. Thanks for the suggestion though.:)

You just knew I'd be back asking for more help, didn't you??:o
I am trying to replace the background on this picture.......I've created my gradient foreground and background colors and applied them from top to bottom. But it's not showing up on my picture. It shows in the layers palette, but not the image unless I turn off the eye on Layer 1, which also removes all the filters.
Can this be accomplished without starting from scratch again??
I'm still not grasping this whole layers thing........sorry.

Another question..........is there a way to make my screenshot larger so you can actually see it???:)

Hi Mary ...
Are you trying to replace the sky ??
Looks like you have done a blue to transparent gradient ... OK then go to the layers palette and drag that layer up to the top. You should then be able to see the blue ... lower the opacity until it looks OK and you may have to mask out (or erase) parts where it goes over the trees.
Another way is to replace the sky with the sky from another photo ... for that effect go to the Subscriber Area>Tutorials and you will find "Replacing a sky using an Adjustment Layer". :)
If you are already logged on then you can use the link in Wendy's Mini Tutorials (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3641)
If you ned any help then just ask :)

This is getting complicated....
Yes, I'm trying to replace the sky with colors I've chosen from another photo. I used the eyedropper to create a gradient of blues.
I moved that layer to the top and it does show up now, lowering the opacity helped a huge amount too.
Now........how do I erase that color from the places it overlaps on the trees and so on?
Appreciate the help.......:p
I was following a tutorial in the video section by Matt called Changing Backgrounds, Aug 12, 2005.

Hi Mary ...
Sounds like the gradient is working just fine for the sky ... now you just have to erase the excess.
Did you install Grant's tools ?? ... if so you can use the layer mask from that. Don't worry if you didn't just choose the eraser tool ... but make sure that you select the option to use a brush and then simply erase the excess blue :)

I'm making progress, but I'm still stuck.
I've used Grant's Tools to apply the Layer Mask, chosen a brush tool to erase the excess. Problem is, I've created a white border around the trees and such now from painting too far. I'm not sure how to change my color white to apply the mask in those select areas again.
Help?:)http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1xn2idnWfQtbvS4cfhFhXjctcfqf0_thumb.gif (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/%5BURL=http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1xn2idnWfQtbvS4cfhFhXjctcfqf0%5D% 5BIMG%5Dhttp://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1xn2idnWfQtbvS4cfhFhXjctcfqf0_thumb.gif%5B/IMG%5D%5B/URL%5D)

Hi Mary ...
Just change your foreground colour to white ... then paint. As you paint on the mask in white the blue will come back :)

Oooh Mary - Good for you. I haven't tried replacing sky yet. I just saw your first photo this morning and really liked what you had done. You know Mary - yesterday I was on a little island that has lots of tourists in the summer and they have many little shops that sell cards and framed photos of views around the island. It was amazing how I spotted that they were just different filters from Photoshop. In fact I actually thought I could have done a better job in some cases. I was talking to one of the owners and she did offer to sell my cards if I wanted (she had seen some of my work at my Dads who lives on Bowen) but I don't think I want to get into that YET. I've soooo much to learn. But when I looked at your image this morning I thought what a pretty card that would make.

That was a very nice thing to say, Thank you so much.
Wendy....thanks for sticking with me on this one....;)
This was actually a lot of fun to do. I'm glad TonyW suggested I try the sky replacement. I'll probably enhance other images using the same technique, I'm pretty happy with the result.:)

The work of an amateur, and nothing compared to any of the other galleries out there.
But, that's a pretty nice compliment from a nice old man:eek::twisted:
Oh alright..........I know I'm gonna pay for that one.....:D:rolleyes:
